Computer and Telephone Problem

JC,

I know this isn’t directly related to fly fishing but it is related to my ability to go to the site.

For the last 1/2 hour I’ve been on ‘HOLD’ with my digital cable provider. My telephone was cutting out frequently and my computer has frozrn up more often than I care to count. Tonight I finally got ticked off when I came home and saw that the puter had frozen yet again and my wife told me that the phone had been cutting out, yet again. So I decided to telephone and here I sit with a phone attached to my ear while I ‘hold’ and listen to “All representatives are assisting other callers … blah blah blah” as well as a constant recording telling me how great Time Warner is. Well, it isn’t. Time Warner phone service stinks. The companys product stinks although the service must be great because of all the practice it has fixing all the problems all of us customers must be calling about! It is now 40 minutes.

Bottom line is, if you have a choice of phone or computer providers, try another. Time Warner isn’t worth it.

If your service is so bad you can’t get here it IS fly fishing related. Sorry about the rotten service Allan - with the rates these companies charge there is no excuse. Isn’t there some sort of Federal oversight on
phone and internet service?

Allan,
I had similar problems & after a service call that didn’t help, Cable sent a gal out…SHE FIXED IT!..She told me she didn’t like the sounds coming from my new modem, checked our cable coming in & a sharp edge of siding had cut 1/2 way through the line. She replaced the modem, smoothed the spot & also ran a protective sleeve & ran a heavier cable in. All ok now! The frustrating part was the length of phone wait, then they ask you to leave your number & they will call back…they DO & it’s another damned recording…cut me off twice, so I just mosied on into their office. After a nice discussion regarding “automated phones”, we got the service call mentioned above scheduled. I agree that there is not a lot of “bang for the buck”.
Good luck!

Follow-up #1:

Called T/W this morning. Got through to a person, regarding the phone, after about 5 minutes. He diagnosed a problem and a service technician is scheduled to comeout tomorrow. I was then transfered to the computer support. He had no answer as to why the computer is freezing up. My theory is that maybe the phone problem is interconnected with the computer and once the phone problem is solved, the computer will be okay? Maybe just wishful thinking on my part.

if you have voip (voice over ip) its all probly related. unfurtunatly i cant get highspeed where i am, and haft aseddle for dish netowrk and dialup.

Allan,
As I’m sure you know, in todays’ world, the individual service persons’ work ethic, “pride level”, & company philosophy dictate resolution. The lady who came out to my home the 2nd time REALLY took time to resolve my problem. She actually admitted she would probably get “talked to” about taking too much time on my service call. This “high speed/low quality” answer to service makes me sick!..Had this lady been my FIRST service call, it would have saved Time Warner Cable time AND money. Speed kills, and IMHO, it’s killing American business. Speed CANNOT replace quality, but it sure can COMPROMISE the quality of the product/service for which we pay.
I apologize for the vent, but I’m Irish!

‘tuber, you beat me again!
I changed Doctor’s because of the Press 1 for…Press 2 for…etc. It may have sped up or reduced his office staff but not for a Doctor!! 14 years and I’m outa there!! My new Doctor is “Doctor Bob” and real people answer the phone!
I have SBC phone and DSL service and the “Office” and have been impressed with their follow up. I ordered DSL service before we installed the pc and they actually called to see if I was having problems as I was not yet on line!!
Gettin’ crotchity in my old age!

I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!

Allan, I don’t pretend to be an expert on this, but similar past problems lead me to suspect you have a wiring problem. I finally had them just run a new line from the pole to replace the old one and it all went away.

The guy who did the work told me it only takes a small cut or crack in the wire’s insulation to cause this.

Well, the company sent someone out. The person played with some lines outside, came inside to do some testing and showed me a testing graph. He said there was a problem with the physical line and or connection at the outside cable that he corrected. The graph indicated an obvious increase in something. He said I should be good and left.

However, apparently that wasn’t the only problem. That day or the next, my computer froze again and I kept getting error messages when I couldn’t even get my RR homepage. Called RR support and was walked through some changes. Seemed okay but same thing happened yesterday. Called RR support again. Walked through a totally different set of changes. Computer seems okay.

Time will tell.

tyeflies, I had the exact same prob with my computer a few weeks ago. Felt silly when the prob was solved. I had my puter connecting line running under my carpet. Turns out, slowly over time, my rolling desk chair had caused damage to it. Some times,(depending on how my chair rolled over the line) my puter would work right or not. Caused my puter to do some crazy things
like yours…
