When you tie the deer hair Comparadun style fly, you want the hair to FLARE on top of hook skank…as opposed to spinning around the shank.
Deer hair readily spins on a bare hook shank. Having a thread base helps in keeping the hair on top of the shank and not spinning.
I have found that dubbing a small ?pillow? upon which to tie the hair on assists in flaring the hair.

That is a great tip! I have never used deer hair for the wing but if I ever do use it I will be trying this technique. Thanks for sharing.
