Colorado Waters & the Buckskin Caddis

Tying some flies for a trip to Colorado, have been told the Buckskin Caddis is an effective fly for the local rivers. There seem to be some variations in how its tyed and I can’t seem to find any actual buckskin, does anyone have any suggestions on additional body materials? Any tying suggestions?

Heres a link to the pattern~

Might try your local auto parts stores, Wal-Marts, etc., and purchase regular car chamois.

Good looking pattern!

You might want to also try the Chamois Nymph in the fly tying archives.

Ditto on finding the chamois at Walmart or an auto parts store. Hope this helps. John

I understand that some chamois are treated w/ something that some (read game and fish wardens) may consider to be BAIT!.

personally, i don’t worry about that.

Can chamois be dyed easily?
Joe

  1. buckskin caddis darken quite a bit in water. When I lived in colorado
I used a medium to light brown buckskin caddis which was deadly. When it is wet it was quite dark as are many of the caddis pupae. My main stay for caddis was a sparse soft hackle with black ostrich wing buds(tied in the round) and dirty brownish olive dubbed body size 14-16. This fly can be tied without weight with one turn of tinsel at the back end of the body, or weighted or as a bead head

There are some variations fo this pattern, looking through the Ed Engles book “Tying Small Flies”, the Buckskin that he ties is done completely with deer hide, no ostrich, no peacock. Just buckskin. Rough side out.

Thanks for all the great advice.

Is the material “Bugskin” the same as chamois?
Thanks,
Joe

Where do you plan to fish and when?

I think the bug skin material is a plastic. Chamois is a soft, leathery/cotton material.

I use a product from Rainbow Gallery called SuperSuede, suede like yarn. Found it many years ago in one of the fly shops in Fort Smith Montana.
