Clouser Minnow material ideas

Love the clouser minnow but don’t like using craft hair or bucktails was wanting some new ideas on other materials. Thanks, Gary

I’ve used hair from the tail of my white husky shepard, and hair from my lab shepard’s tail as well.

WHat about fox or coyote, easy to find. I use my dog’s hair as it’s easily obtainable, and they don’t seem to mind, just a little snip for a few flies once in a while and it is un noticed.

You ought to try some Fishair! It has a nice shine to it and is real “limp”. Also, if you’re going for more flash, you could try some Super Hair, Unique Hair, Poly Bear, or Angel Hair. These are probably going to be more stiff then the bucktail or others. I have heard dog hair is supposed to work well! Beleive it or not there was a video of a guy tying a minnow with his dogs hair!!! I think it was an earlier post on here.
Hope this helps!

Crash,

Any long fiber will work for a ‘clouser’ style fly.

I’ve used lots of stuff, including rope fibers, horse mane and tail, nylon ‘duster’ fibers, synthetic furs and yarns, and just about all the ‘usual’ stuff.

Perfer bucktail, though. Seems to just ‘work’ well with the pattern.

Plus it’s inexpensive and comes in nice colors.

Good Luck!

Buddy

Bob Clouser ties some smaller clousers with squirrel tail. BILL

While I tie most of my streamer patterns with Polar Fiber, for Clousers I prefer natural fur. You might want to try fox fur. This is one application where I prefer fox tail fur over fox body fur. You can get a very nice selection of fox fur at Moscow Hide and Fur (hideandfur.com). Excellent products and great folks to do business with.

Crash,

There is literally no fiber or hair over an inch in length that can’t be used for Clousers. Poly rope, pet hair, any exotic hair you can lay your hands on will all work. I’m particularly partial Polar Fiber or Fibre. Good length, GREAT color and easy to work with. Happy Silver Baboon Hair Clousers  , 8T

I have used marabou which works nicely I have also used flashabou which works so good I hate to even put it up on here.

Coyote tail (or red fox tail) with Rootbeer Crystal Flash is good for trout & bass.

Scott

anybody know what color Bob Clouser first tied the clouser minnow in?

Here is a fox minnow. It uses fox hair for the body. Maybe this can help!

Thank you for all the great ideas, going to tie some up right now. Thanks, Gary

For a few months I’ve been tying clousers using Enrico Puglisi Fibers. The EP 3-D Fibers blends and the regular colors. I like the material very much. I also tie them on the point side of the hook shank like the wing on a bonefish fly rather than the traditional way and I catch just as many fish IMO.

i just tied a size 8 clouser using fox body hair (belly) and squirrel tail…looks good. I used Bead chain for weight, but im not sure if i used a heavy enough size.

Yak!

Bob
