Closed Thread

Was wondering why not able to respond ???

probably because enough was enough and it was the moderators choice

I’ve always felt closed threads, if possible, were preferable to ones that simply disappear.
Moderating, even though done well by being firm but fair, can be a thankless job. :tieone:

There are a couple of closed threads. Which one?

REE

Moderating is a very tough job. Most times we end up beating a dead horse. Enough is enough.

mods here do a fantastic job. never once have i seen a thread closed for anything but the stated rules.

I agree the mods here do a great job.

There have been a few times the decisions to close threads and leave others open has caused me to scratch my head, but I don’t have time or energy to be a mod so I just scratch my head and move on.

Example,
the Starbucks threads were closed because supposedly it was about guns. However, outside of the initial couple posts, there was nothing about guns there, poeple were talking about quality of the coffee and personal character of the CEO. Yest the threads were closed.

Vietnam Wall - The Vietnam War is one of the most politically charged events of our time yet a discussion about the memorial was allowed to remain open (and rightly so in my opinion).

Fixed Blade Knives - Knives are every bit as much a weapon as guns and I would venture to guess more people are injured and end up in a hospital from misuse of knives every year than from misuse of firearms. However, a thread was closed because someone mentioned firearms while one about knives was allowed to remain open.

Fire Arms While Fishing - this thread has 3 pages but is not closed.

I’ve seen some threads closed because there were cross words between posters, but I’ve seen others where the discussion was equally or even more ugly and they were allowed to remain open. Sometimes it seems it’s just “who” is in the discussion as much as it is “what” the discussion is about.

Again, by and large, I think the mods here do a great job and I sure don’t want the job. But there are little inconsistencies that lead to these types of threads being opened "When A = B, why stop B and allow A to continue).

Anyway, no complaints here, just an observation.

Jeff

Religion - threads get closed here because they are about “religion” yet, prayer request threads are - Rightfully - allowed to stay open. I’m glad there is a place we can share prayer requests and people in need of prayer support can see how many people are supporting them in prayer. However, one could argue that prayer requests are against the no religion policy.

I’d disagree but it is the moderator’s prerogative, and like lastchance said, sometimes enough is enough.

I have never seen a gun thread closed that hadn’t degraded into name calling and politics. Unfortunately this happens almost immediately when guns are brought up.
The knife thread stayed up because it stayed about which knifeto buy, why one might serve the needs of the questioner better than another.

One of the nice things about this site is the grey area. Things here are not black and white. It seems the mods allow a lot of grey area discussion. This is good but I can see where left to individual interpretation the grey area of one thread may seem very much like another and cause confusion when one thread is closed and the other left to continue.

You mods do a great job keeping the environment of this board fairly consistent over time which I think is tough to do. Keep it up.

No No I’m not questioning any of our wonderful moderators, and I really mean that statement. I guess I must have missed a thread or some posts.

MSD53X,

Which thread were you refering to?

On a different note and a distinct hijack, I’ll be in the Bangor/Brewer area during the 2d thru 13 of April for my daughter’s wedding. Any trout fishing in the area?

REE

Eric,
Normally, I would agree with you, but here is a quote from one of the moderators in the Starbucks thread right before it was closed down:

Friendly warning shot.

Guns, politics, and religion…
Let’s keep them out of FAOL.

Any situation that is as highly charged as gun control, health care, or worm drowning being superior to fly tossing…
None of the above discussions can lead to any good in this BB, those discussions have their own place and time, neither of which is here.

"Let’s keep them out of FAOL, surely sounds to me like it’s a taboo subject, however, as you stated, a number of threads about firearms have been allowed to stay open.

I didn’t follow the Starbucks thread because the topic didn’t interest me, but unless some posts were deleted, I’ve seen much hotter topics and much more name calling go on for pages and this thread was shut down pronto.

Again, nothing against the mods, they do a great job, but sometimes, I do walk away scratching my head about which threads are allowed to go on for pages, and which ones get shut down right away.

No skin off my back since I’m not the one paying the bills for FAOL so the mods can do whatever they want whenever they want.

I think this site is well run and that is the reason I keep coming back.

Jeff

I wonder if any “grey areas” referred to could result from this being one of the best behaved sites around in relation to members consideration of each other; and also of course the moderation. Maybe, instead of instantly hitting the red button as on other sites, things occasionally get left to give a chance for reasonable resolution as this is usually the case.

As for closed threads I am all for it. I hate to see threads disappear after some people have put a lot of considered input into something, then due to somebody flaming the entire piece gets wasted.

Well done everybody here I think.

I hate to blow away a thread. Grey Area, As we keep this site a family site, any of your children can look over your shoulder and you do not need to run them away. If it falls into this area, bad language, or flaming another member, I will blow it away.
Many I let go until enough is enough and close it for everyone to read because some have a very good topic. What I really do not like to see is an out and out hijack. Prefer for someone to start another thread. Do not like to see the hi jacks.
Perhaps this might shed a bit of light as to how I see things and believe it or not, LF agrees with REE & I.
Have fun, learn, extend your knowledge to others, act as if you were sitting in my front room.
Denny

Ron, you may recall me asking the same thing last fall. My answer to you may jog your memory: Don’t forget to eat the lobster!

REE;

As far as the thread goes, water under the bridge. But YUP there is trout in them thar streams !!! Do a Google. You won’t have to go far, plenty of fish in that area ( you don’t have to go far for any water in Maine )
In fact the state legislatures just voted on a emergency bill, and apparently opening date to fishing season got included. Whereas April 1st was to be opening, looks like March 27 (this Sat.) this year. We are still waiting for confirmation on this. ( waiting anxiously !!)
Don’t forget what Diane said. Do get some lobster, prices have been very reasonable this year

LF, Denny, REE, and rtidd do a great job at keeping this a family friendly place. It is much appreciated!
