I have got the chance to spend next weekend on the clearwater at orofino/grangeville
need recommendations on flies. I’ve got until thursday to get them tied up.
thanks Randy.
This was report by eabecker:
Well it has been too cold to do any stillwater fishing around here, but I was able to get a few steelhead to lick my fly last weekend. Actually, myself and the group I was with had a fairly remarkable trip to the SF of the Clearwater River. Amoung 4 of us we landed 14 steelhead from about 43 hookups ( I got 6 and 15, respectively).
Sorry, I couldn’t post some stillwater fishing reports, but those will be coming once the ice comes off. Hopefully, this is better than nothing

Im confused, if steelhead are anadromus, then what are they doing in the streams now? Its like march…
they are hold overs from last summer they tend to be B runs with some running over 20 lbs.
what makes them hold over?
They come up the river during summer.stay over the winter and then spawn in the spring after the temperature starts to raise.

gonfishn,
For sure. He even admitted that was a first. My brother in-law just got back, the same day Becker started and he FINALLY got a 36". As Becker say’s and my brother…“it’s all in the timing” Very Good Luck and Tight Lines To You. Keep us up on the event, cause chances are I will be doing it next year.

FG,
Why wait? Join us at the Lowell Fish-In this fall, September 24 through the 30th. Great trout fishing on the Selway and Lochsa, plus steelheading in the Clearwater.
Check out the previous Idaho Fish-in pics and info.

Let me know more details. I’m in. Going to be up by the Continental Divide end part of October (not Halloween weekend, big night for us R-n-R ers). Planning our week trip to the “H”. But, feel the need for STEEL! My nephew lives in Maridian and I understand that it is about a 3 hr drive to Clear, Right?

That is not true. They are winter run steelhead. The catching is good from what I hear. I haven’t been yet this year because I don’t want to fight the crowds. Flies are simple: eggs, frammus, yarn on hook. Purple Peril is the only swung fly that I’ve caught fish on. Most of my fish have been on a black egg sucking wooly bugger fished dead drift 9’ below an indicator. It’s getting warm around here and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s blowing out someday soon. It fishes best when dropping/clearing, but where doesn’t? Good luck, the south fork is the best place to fly fish.
