Cleaning your Reels

I just purchased a used reel and I am looking for suggestions on what is the best way to clean your reels, what type of lube/oil would you use and how often do you need to clean your reel and I know that depends on the usage, let say you fish once a week or so

I use Boeshield. There a few things that claim to ‘replace water.’ Seems to work for me. Grease inside of course where grease is appropriate.

I use Quantum “Hot Sauce” oil and grease. Highly recommended on most reel web sites plus One Pfoot has it. You could visit One-Pfoot’s web site and contact him through his contact phone number or e-mail and purchase it from him. He does not show it for sale on his web site, but, he does sell it. Good stuff!

You mean you can clean them…

For cleaning I would recommend you use Brake cleaner…it will make it squeaky clean so you are starting with a “clean slate”.

Brake cleaner is better than carburetor cleaner the carb cleaner leaves just a little film.

Wassamatta with yoos guys! WD-40 to clean and Hot Sauce to lube. Yoi and Double Yoi!

You might want to read up on the stuff:

Do we have any sponsors that sell the Hot Sauce?

for cleaning… a bath in a white vinegar and water solution

… then the Quantum Hot Sauce or the equivalent from Penn

Penn Angler’s Pack, Reel Oil, Reel Grease

I would say go to the website for the reel manufacturer and see what they have to say about the subject. For example, Ross warns against the use of any kind of lube on their reels.

You’ll are making it difficult on what the best method is for cleaning your reel, there is a bunch of great advice. Keep the suggestion coming we will nail down the best method

Let us know what you decide is “the best”.

I still say the “best” is whatever the reel maker suggests as the best for their product.

Would it be the “only” nope, but they made the thing and they have warranties so they will not recommend anything that will cause the reel to fail.

Just my .02 worth.

ducksterman, I am hoping you’ll will give me the best advice because I am lost of the best method.

I agree with this 1000%.

If you end up with an older reel by a manufacturer that is no longer in business or clueless about their older offerings; here is some good info:
