Cleaning Deer Hair

I’m a hunter and if I get a deer this year I would like to save some of the hide, and tail for tying. I was wondering if anyone has done this, and what is the most efective way for getting rid of bugs, parasites, and eggs or larvea.

Thanks, Warm Waater Fly Fisher

Not being short with you here but just do a search on this site and you will come up with all the answers to your questions. It has been gone over many times on this board with a lot of very good information on theses subject’s. It is all there just by looking. Ron

Chris Helm is a friend of mine and the expert on deer hides. When i was with him in Dec he had 14 hides drying in his back yard. He has his pick of hundreds of deer hides each year. In warmer time he drys in the garage but when its cold, bug free outside just air dry nailed to ply wood. You remove all the flesh wash to remove the blood before drying. Dont use Borax or salt as some will say–just air dry. read about deer hides at http://www.globalflyfisher.com/staff/helm/selecting BILL

William Fitzgerald, if I use the method that you described, will the hair be clean enough to store with other materials?

Warm Water Ffisher–a little more detail. The easiest way to flesh a hide is with a draw knife( lawn mower blade ,machete or large sharp knife) and a fleshing beam. A smooth log will work for a beam. With this method you can flesh a whole deer hide in 5 minutes even with lots of meat on the hide. Wash now to remove blood and dirt. Add salt and alum for flexiablity. Borax might be needed in a high humidity climate but i haven’t found it neccasary to mess with either. Like i mentioned before, I just hang it out to air dry. I cut up the hide bringing in the house what I will use and store the remainder in a plastic air tight tub in the garage. I add ENOZ Moth Ice Crystals to the items in storage in the garage to kill any moths beetles their eggs and larvae. BILL
