cicada event

Wingspan?
On the water, the wings would be at rest against the body.
I was fishing near my hometown in S Central Mo. On a trout stream one summer day. I saw what I thought was a small bird hit the water. It was immediately taken by a large trout. After I got my wits about me, and realized it was a cicada, I searched my fly boxes for the largest fly I could find - a big 'ol hopper that was over-dressed. I plopped it out on the stream and immediately got a savage take.

There is no delicate presentation required. You just plop it out on the water and hold on.

I would think you would use similar tackle as you would for fishing a mouse or lemming pattern.
Cheers,
C.

And don’t forget, they are edible. In the same family as lobster, crab and shrimp. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/05/0503_040503_cicadafeast.html

Same Family?

Hi Allan, I’m not into the biology of the critters. Just repeating what I found on the web.

I actually wasn’t sure and tried to look it up just out of curiosity. Never wanted to try all those gourmet chocolate covered ants, grasshoppers, etc- . Regardless, isn’t there a saying, “You can’t pick your relatives”.
LOL

Speaking of Cicadas…

Here’s a little tutorial I did on this pattern if anyone is interested: http://www.flyfishfood.com/2013/05/the-sickada-foam-cicada-fly-pattern.html

The recent issue of Fly Tyer…[Summer]…has a tutorial “Fishy’s Cicada” by Jay “Fishy” Fullum.
