Christmas fly swap

This year for Christmas I thought it was time to do something different with my best friend from back home. We normally do some sort of fishing related exchange. This year I suggested doing a six fly swap. Here is the criteria that we came up with:

  1. Dry fly
  2. Something with deer hair
  3. Something with foam
  4. Something with rubber legs
  5. Something classic
  6. Something funny/creative

Here are my ties:

  1. Dry fly - I cheated a little on this one… part of the fly should float…

  2. Something with deer hair - I thought I would mix it up a little with this one. He is probably expecting a mouse or bass popper. The crayfish head is spun deer hair.

  3. Something with foam - I have tied up poppers like this before but this is the first I added a flash sticker too it.

  4. Something with rubber legs - Hoppicator

  5. Something classic - well… this looks classic to me…

  6. Creative/Funny - I call it the food chain…

What do you think?

Love em all =, but that craw is great. And the cyclops - spin - spintailed popper is out of this world. All that’s left is to fish em.

Not only creative, but some killer stuff! I really like the hopper!!! And yes, you did cheat on the dry fly pattern, but your forgiven! LOL!!! Checked the “rule book” on that one but conclusions are hazy, may have to amend it though, for PEOPLE like you who like to push the envelop/ think outside the box and other crazy notions. I’ll be watchin you!!!

Believe it or not, the “food chain” trio could be every bit as effective as it is funny. I often trail a streamer behind a nymph and find that smaller fish try to take the nymph away from the streamer and bigger fish see it as a distracted baitfish and slam the streamer. Should work the same with a series of streamers as well.

Did a lot of this on the Madison in August 2009. Lightning bug followed by a woolhead mudder type of streamer. 90% of the fish caught on that rig, including the biggest, was on the Lightning bug.

Outside of the flash, maybe, I have no idea why. Theoretically, swinging a nymph on a tight line and stripping it back at the speed of sound doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

I like the Hopindicator! Could one use the loops beneath for attaching a dropper? How heavy is the loop mono?

Use a loop to loop connection on the front loop and run the tag through the back loop. It was the first one that I have tied and I have not fished it yet. I used a 30lb shooting line for the loops on the fly. Not sure if it is too heavy or not.
