Chinese Partridge:

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has used Chinese Partridge very much? If so, could you give me a comparison between that and English or Hungarian Partridge. Maybe some pros and cons if there are any.

Thanks as always.

I do not like it nearly as well for a number of reasons… The skins run quite a bit smaller and the barring is greatly reduced from Hungarian. There is sone neat chestnut/reddish coloration on more of the breast feathers leading into the flank, but it has not done much for me when I used it.

I consider hun to be right at the very top of the pecking order as soft hackle and I would put the Chinese significantly below.

I did get to see them in the wild in Taiwan.

The smaller is the primary “pro” for Chinese partridges – they have smaller feathers. If you not looking for small, go with Hun.

Point taken on the smallest useable hackle. On the generally smaller feathers, however, I believe the head and neck of a typical hun produce more small hackles than a Chinese skin. The segmented look created by the Hun barring is the biggest shortcoming, IMO… There simply does not seem to be a lot of feather on one.

YMMV
