I buy a lot of my chenille in 72 yard skiens. I am getting ready to place a order once I go through my tying desk and find all I have and what I need. Right now I have som med black chenille. If anyone needs some let me know and I will trade or sell you some. I prefer trade

Where the heck do you get 72yard skiens of chenille?
Is that at your local fly shop?
It sounds great no more 15 little packs, to get enough to last the winter?
I now live in a town with two fly shops so not a problem to get re-sup but still one trip does it all is better…
:? 72 yards? Let’s see. There’s 36 inches in a yard. Just a minute while I do the math. . . . . That’s 2592 inches. If you use 3 inches to tie a fly that’s - let’s see here . . . 864 flies per skien. Holy cow!!! And you’re gonna buy how many skiens??? I don’t think I’ve ever tied that many flies in a whole year. Dude, I am in awe. You are my hero.
CJ
I buy the skiens from hook and hackle, netcraft, and barlows. They run about $9.00 a skien on average. when you figure the cost at a 5 yd card on average 1.49 it is quite a savings. Just about $12 a skien. LOL and yes I tie that many flies a year.
Most craft stores have various chenilles in skeins. The last time I checked I believe the prices were in the $5 to $7 range. If I used a lot of chenille, it would be a good investment,
Craft store chenille is of crappy quality compared to chenille made for tying flies. In my opinion.
most craft stores dont carry the small sizes of chenille fly tyers use.
a 72 yard skein at hook and hackle is $7.92 before a 20% discount. $6.34 final price.
if you like to dye materials, buy white and dye whatever color you like.
Amen to that, brother! It shreds apart and has lots of voids (bare spots) over its length. I gave away most of the crap I bought at the craft & fabric stores. I don’t know what they could possibly use that lousy material for. It certainly doesn’t make nice flies. Many fly shops get the large skein and wrap the small cards themselves. Keeps the profit margin intact.
Glad I’m not the only one to recognize this.

hbob, PM sent
I’m with Chris & Joe on that quality thing…I also found the craft store stuff had no “life” to it …matted in the water, no movement …
Having said that I see there is a much larger selection now…may be things have changed…
Angler’s Workshop also sells chenille by the skein, and not just the regular stuff. Carded chenille gets flat and kinked, and that doesn’t happen with skeins.

A little steam takes care of the flat and kinky thing…
I buy from Danville direct and when I buy chenille I have to buy 2 skeins or 144 yards so when I am ordering and if any of you want to join in and get a color/size I don’t use you can split it with someone else.
If it is a color and size I use and need I will split it with you and I know these places can’t beat my price for sure since they buy from the same place I do.
Mind you I would need to be making an order and you would have to pay your share of the shipping.
If anyone is interested PM me and I will keep your name to check with when I order. I buy a lot of custom colors of variegated that you will not see at any of the supply places.

Skip, I’d be very interested in sharing an order with you. What types of chenille do you buy? I’d mostly be interested in smaller sizes. Stuff like ultra vernille, etc.
I agree with the comments that several have made about craft store material. It doesn’t just limit itself to chenille either. Most is real junk. I have a tough time convincing some newbies about this. They also go crazy over the material assortments in knitting and sewing shops. Being a addict to more classical stuff myself, I think some of my aquaintances are also color blind.
I buy anything Danville makes and if it’s something I feel I can use we could split some, but if it’s something I don’t then you would have to buy 144 yards.
Also I have had it with Rayon even in skeins so I am thinking about paying a little more to have it on a spool since it’s only $1.50 to get it on 144 yard spools. The small sizes come in 144 yards on a single spool.
Anyway let me know what colors and size you are interested in and I will look at it. It comes in 00, 0, 1, 2, 3 and all the way to size 12 which I can imagine what that would be used on as I never use anything larger than #2 even on my jigs.
Ultra Chenille I would have to ask them about as i only have bought one size and color from them on that. I would like to add some smaller sizes though.

I purchase chenille for tying Wolly Buggers at my local Ocean State Job Lot http://www.oceanstatejoblot.com/osjlpro … fault.aspx
It only costs $2.00 for 1 skein (174 yards). It’s probably a lifetime supply for me! Available colors - Black, Red, Teal, Navy, & Green. Colors may vary at different locations.
Happy tying!
That is cheaper than buying from the Mfg. like Danville so could you post a pic to see what it looks like? Is it like the stuff Walmart carries or is it for fly/jig tying? There is a hugh difference in the materials for sure.

Lion Brand yarn Co. out of NY, NY is the manufacturer. I’m not an expert at tying flies, to be honest with you, the wooly bugger is one of three patterns I’ve learned to tie. To me, the chenille was the right price for my wallet and the trout that I have caught this summer haven’t been complaining about the quality!
I’m not sure how to go about getting an image posted here of the Chenille, but here is a link to the product. http://pages.e-yarn.com/6030/InventoryPage/1419775/1.html
I hope this helps.
