chenille yarn

I found a bunch of chenille yarn skeins, really cheap, at one of our local thrift stores and they’re made of either Acrylic and Rayon. Are these materials suitable for fly tying??

Thx’s
Mike

I tie with all sorts of “found” and “bargain” materials.

They will probabbly work just fine.

Barring local, state, and federal laws, there ARE no unsuitable materials for fly tying. some work better than others, however. Try them and see if the fish like them.

Those are perfect, it’s the cotton chenille you want to stay away from - and that’s only because it rots and falls apart eventually. Traditional chenille in the fly shops are Rayon based, with the exception of Ultra chenille - which is made from Polyamide (a nylon).

I have used synthetic chenille from the bargain bins at wally world and other stores with great success. The thing I look for is the size of the material. Some of that yarn is like trying to tie a fly with 1/4 inch sisal rope. My penny’s worth. Jim

Just went over this morning and pick up 6 skeins of the Rayon Chenille, should last me a life time  The color selections not really the greatest but what the hey, for .75cents a skein, can’t go wrong!

thx’s for the advise, always appreciated.

Happy Holidays,

Mike
