Got a newsletter today from Abel. Checkout these nippers (click here). I love Abel’s anodized artwork.
Dang!! for that price they better catch fish too
I also like the anodizing Abel’s does with there products, but not the price that goes along with it.
Because then I’d have to get the Belt Buckle and matching Money Clip to complete the ensemble and if I did that, I’d have no money left to clip !
my crystal ball said they are not in future also.
My reaction is that this is just awful merchandising in the middle of a recession. The people that buy those nippers will also buy this crap.

Thanks for posting this. You reminded me that I want to buy some new nippers and needed to search for the kind I like. I found them and ordered two. They are not the ones shown above and two of them cost less than half the price of one of the nippers above including tax and shipping. I already know they will cut tippet.
I buy mine 2 for $1, Walgreens brand.
Yeah, I suppose if you have an unlimited disposable income they are great?
The best fly fisherman I know uses fingernail clippers and they do not seem to inhibit his ability to fish rings around my sorry derriere.
I use the Dr. Slick stainless steel nippers. They work for me.
I can’t recall what they cost but it’s probably too much.
I like my nippers, always easy to find, never fumbling for them with wet hands. The sit at the front of my mouth…called teeth.
My crystal ball said your are crazy just for thinking about something like that.

I admit $50 for a pair of nippers is crazy, but I also think $800 for a fly rod is nuts, too. It’s the times we live in, and apparently there’s a market. Thank heavens for my 2 15-year old Sages and the rods I’ve built.
Regards,
Scott
For some of us those nippers are not an option anymore. Although, I got a new set of uppers a couple years ago and I don’t think I have tried them out on tippet yet.
I am going to make a guess that Abel employs several people and pays them a decent wage, hopefully in the good ole USA. I am not sure I would pay that much for clippers or a money clip if money wasn’t a consideration but if you can good for you. My clippers from Northern tools work very well as do the scissor/forcep combo from Kmart.
Mine don’t do so well with 20lb flouro.
$50 for a pair of nippers??? Not on your life!
To each his/her own when it comes to how you spend your money. I like them and while I am not in the market for nippers as the ones I am using work fine, Abel makes outstanding products made in the USA.
I have talked with a couple of people who have these Abel nippers and think they are a good investment. They do a couple of things that most nippers don’t do well. They cut the super braid lines and they cut heavy mono. I have tried to cut heavy mono with the standard inexpensive nippers or clippers and damaged the cutters without cutting the line. I think conventional anglers who fish with super braid lines a lot may like these Abel nippers, worn on a lanyard, for convenience over reaching for a pair of pliers. Same for some fly or conventional anglers who work with heavy shock tippets or leaders. I think I will continue to invest in inexpensive pliers.
Wonder how many pair of nail clippers…er, nippers I can buy for $50.00 to $100.00.
But they DO have replaceable blades & they’re probably a bargain at less than $45.00 & they’re PURTY!
I’ll feel lots better using what I have & giving that 100 bucks to my Church, the Salvation Army, & St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

I wonder what is dumber; spending money on some Wal-Mart option made in China, one of these higher priced, lower quality import options:

Or supporting an American company, employing Americans making quality American goods that should last 10 times longer?
I realize not everyone chooses to spend $50 on a pair of nippers, but I sometimes wonder if the buy American thing only applies when it’s convenient or when not doing so allows folks to bash a high priced item that they really covet?
