CHEAP, and CHEAPER, and CHEAPEST rods

Hi Folks -

The following was originally posted as a reply on Morneb’s thread on Expensive and Cheaper Fly Rods. Yesterday, Ohiotuber urged me to post it as a new thread. I think a good part of Mike’s reaction to this was the context, as a part of Morneb’s thread that just fell into the right place at the right time.

I am actually somewhat reluctant to start this new thread. I would rather have you read Morneb’s thread, at least the several pages before page 8, to put this in the same context that Mike had. Having said that - I trust that it puts another perspective on some of the things we do getting ready to go fly fishing and what happens when we are about it.

Finally - if you don’t like this thread, blame it on Mike. If you do like it, give the credit to Flybinder, because we all know that Paul will take credit for it at some point and we might as well beat him to the punch.

I’ve been reading this ( Morneb’s ) thread from the beginning, and much enjoying it. I have resisted the temptation to join the conversation, up to this point.

But - today I tried out my first home made rod and outfit, so I qualify to talk about CHEAP, and CHEAPER, and CHEAPEST rods.

My entire fly fishing outfit today cost less than $1.50. I got skunked, but that is not relevant, because I’m satisfied that I can catch fish with this outfit in the right place at the right time.

The rod is a Scott 401.5-1O. ( Hope the other Scott has some sense of humor about this, if they run across it. ) The designation may not be familiar to you. It is a four foot for 1.5 weight one piece made of oak. Get beyond all that fancy language and what you have is a 48" X 1/4" oak dowel from the local hardware store. It cost $.84, including tax. The rod was finished with a tiptop fashioned from Maxima Chameleon leader material, and a decorative butt wrap of fly tying thread.

The line was a custom made Scott 1.5 LLF. Another unfamiliar designation ? It is a 1.5 wt level line floating. The line was furled using 45 plus feet of 20# dacron fly line backing on a seven foot jig to end up with a six strand level line about six feet long. Some mucilin turned a sure sinker into a floating line. Since I had the backing laying around, it didn’t cost anything, unless you include labor, but as cheap as I am, I wouldn’t pay myself - so it was free.

The leader was one of my standard thread furled leaders with silver chain tip ring. They cost about $.35 for materials, and I don’t pay labor for that kind of thing.

Can’t calculate the cost of four feet of 4x tippet, so let’s just say that was $.10.

Fished a size 18 griffith gnat. That’s probably another $.20 ??

That actually comes to $1.49 - got a penny to spare !!

Anyway, I could actually cast this outfit well enough to get the fly almost 20’ from where I was standing. The rod was super fast action - some people would call it a stick, of all things. The line carried a tight loop, the furled leader turned over beautifully, the dry fly floated along nicely in a drag free drift. What more could you ask for, except for some nice brown or cutt to take the fly ??

I have to admit, the rod was a bit fast for my liking, and casting such a short rod with a 1/4" grip is a bit tiring. And it would probably max out under 30’ even if I added a couple more six foot sections of Scott 1.5 LLF.

But it only cost a buck and a half, with change to spare - and I had a blast. Next time out, I’m gonna fish a creek where a 20’ cast is almost always too long, and the fish just love to play with things floating along the surface. Can’t hardly stand the wait.

John

The fish are always right.

HHHmmmm…I wonder if JC would say that rod is cursed:confused:

John,

You’ve done ‘cheapest’…

I’ll try ‘cheaper’…

I have a short ‘micro light’ spinning rod, a 4 1/2 foot Quantum. It was on sale at the outlet mall near me many years ago for $10. One ‘regular’ spinning guide for a stripper, the rest of the guides are single foot wire guides (other than the spinning guide, it ‘looks’ like a fly rod). It has a ‘tennessee handle’ with slip rings and holds a fly reel just fine.

I bought a small all graphite reel for $17 at the local Sports Authority.

I found a 3 wt. line on sale at WalMart for $4.99 ($5?)

That’s rod, reel, and line for $32 plus tax.

All bought ‘new’. Whole thing, line and all, weighs almost nothing in the hand.

Rod will throw a line fifty feet. I’ve actually caught large and small mouth bass (largest largemouth was over seven pounds), bluegills, crappie, brook trout, brown trout, scads of rainbows, a couple of catfish, and one 25" northern that I’ll not soon forget…I’ve fished lakes, ponds, streams and rivers with it…

This rod is fun to fish, casts farther than you’d believe, and has enough backbone to take it out of the toy category and into the ‘realistic chance of hooking and landing the fish’ realm.

It’s a perfect topwater rod for panfish and bass, and it’s becoming a favorite of mine for a couple of small brook trout streams in Colorado…tight casting lanes, lots of overhaning brush, dry fly and lots of little fish kind of places.

Using this rod for those chores, I’m not losing anything to anyone, regardless of the rod they choose.

Plus it’s really fun to fish with it…

Buddy

I’ve got one that I built out of salvaged parts from other busted rods.
the seat is a reversed graphite seat from a spinning rod,the guides came off of a busted browning rod.the rod itself is an LCI [Loomis Composites} tip off off a 9’ 5wt. reel is a old medalist that was given to me with a 5 wt. line on it.

I can’t let my wife see this thread!

Vic

It’s always the fisherman, not the gear.

Buddy

Hey Vic!
Ya mean your 'boos cost more than a buck fifty?
Look at the bright side…If she does, you may get a bunch of dowel rods for Christmas.
Mike

I’ve used bamboo cane pole (think Tom Sawyer not Tonkin cane)with a 20 foot length of old fly line with furrled leader and mono for a tipit and then the fly. The end of the fly line is tied off to the butt of the pole. When I feel fancy, I wrap over the but and knot with electrical tape.

I’ve caught a mess of blue gills with it.

Some days I just dapple a fly over the shoreline cattails and into the water. I have fun with whatever bites. One of these days I’ll get a decent bass on this set-up.

Ed

Perhaps my absolute cheapest rod was the radio aentenna from a friend’s pick-up truck!

(It was about to be towed to the junk yard)

One of these day’s I’ll make it a little longer by attaching the base of it to a broomstick handle to make it a six foot rod instead of puny three footer.

Ed

Rod 1 and 2:
Orvis Streamline 5wt $29.00 on closeout
Ross reel $30.00 on closeout

Rod 3:
Redington 4 wt with Cabela’s
Cabela’s Prestige reel and line
Combo for $119.

Rod 3:
Scientific Anglers 8wt $15.00
S A 8wt reel $15.00

What’s not to like?

Buddy -

Your outfit sounds intriguing. More ideas to work with. Thanks.

BBW -

I actually have some pretty nice equipment, which came to me the way it sounds yours came to you - at deep discount.

The best deal was the Abel Super 4 that I found in the South Fork of the Snake a couple years ago. Tried to trace its owner through Abel and a couple local fly shops and got a lead on the owner, but couldn’t find him. Had to put it on my favorite 5 wt that I got on closeout for about 40% of retail. A really nice outfit for under $200.

The other really great deal was on a Winston Ibis 7’6" for 3 wt. Won it in a raffle. Hard to beat that. It sports an Abel TR1 that I got on close out for about $100. That is one nice combination for a hundred bucks. Great for the small streams I like to fish.

John

Dang! I wish the tomato stake I have only cost $1.49!

Leo -

You got to stop shopping at the Orvis Store and figure out where your local True Value store is located !!

John

I like to buy expensive rods and reels and for that matter all of my equipment cheap. Last year’s models don’t bother me any. Demo equipment that looks just like it came out of the box doesn’t bother me. Buying from Ebay doesn’t even make me blink. I say, buy good stuff, just don’t pay retail.

From one of the original cheap bastids.

Rick

No Mike, I didn’t get any of my 'boo rods for a buck fifty…wish I had!!! I do have two graphites, makers unknown at the moment but more than likely discount store pieces, that were given to me by guys who tried fly fishing and didn’t care for it. I’ve never fished either rod.

I’m frugal but I don’t like cheap. For me cheap has always ended up being expensive.

Vic

Here is one I’m considering just for fun:

50" ice rod blank - $1.90
Clearance seat - $2.00
Clearance grip - $2.00
Guides/top - $5.00

4’2" fly rod for a grand total of 10.90. It might be worth a try. At worst, I can call it a $10 experiment.

Ol’ Blue,

You might find you like that rig.

I’ve built ALL of the fly rods I fish, many from spinning blanks.

While I ‘paid less’ for the components, often much less, the rods themselves are as good or better than you can buy at any price. Of course, if you figure in labor, all my fly rods cost more than ANY factory rod…and worth every penny.

Buddy

Last year (someone here may remember the rantings of a tight wad) I was bragging that I had got an orvis 5wt graphite for 2$ (yup, handed her a $5 and patiently waited for change). Nice rod altogether. Stuck an old (3yrs) scientific angler reel {cant remember #}
with some 5wt floating dt that was hanging around (one of several) stuck one of those orvis woven leaders that I got for a buck at a closeout.Got the tippet for a dollar too. I dont buy flys anymore . I ty my own . Four dollars to get this rig running as I see it. Thrift stores , gotta luv 'em.

Can you get the $1.50 oufit in a spey version?! That I’d like to see!

Steve -

As far as the rod goes - a trip to the woods with an axe would be the first step.

Then you would have to add several sections of Scott 1.5LLF - but they are free, so that would not increase the cost.

The spey version would probably extend the casting distance to well over 30’, maybe out to 40’ or so, depending on your skill in waving that tree trunk around.

At some point, it could get to be counterproductive ??
