Charlie's RS2/Dry Fly Hook?

I was looking at the Charlie Craven’s RS2 pattern. Why does he use a dry fly hook? Is it because it’s fished as an emerger? They work and are easy to tie. His idea of burning the the wing material to keep it together is a great idea.

ya thats a nice variation of rim chungs original rs2

ive always tied it on a tiemco 101. i want it in the film or just under the film as an emerger.

You can also find the pattern in Ed Engle’s “Tying Small Flies” which is a great book.

I guess you can fish the RS2s as nymphs down deep, too, right?

You can tie that pattern variation on lots of different hooks.

I generally use either a scud hook or a nymph hook and fish them down deep. If you want them as an emerger, use a light wire hook. Depends on what you need the fly to do.

I like the simplicity of this tie. Nice clean look, easy to do in small sizes (I drop the dubbing in the 22s and 24s and just use the tying thread, though-the fishys don’t seem to care).

Using the ‘tag’ of the thread to separate the tails is a great tip (you can also form a loop with it and use it to divide a 'tripple tail).

Good stuff.
