Changes in American Angler?

I just received my latest edition of American Angler magazine. I just seems different in terms of lay out, content, binding, cover, etc. They use to be one of the better fly fishing magazines. Have they made changes in ownership??? Now it seems more like those free throw away type magazine they give you at the fly shop.

Just curious what others think.

Yes, they (and Fly Tyer) have had a change in ownership. They have, IMHO, gone downhill considerably. I probably won’t renew my subscription to AA, it now appears to be content-free. I may re-up to Fly Tyer.

read dave klausmeyers reason for some changes here

i believe they are still owned by morris communications company

I also agree with perhaps not renewing my subscription. I have both Fly Tyer and AA and I don’t mind paying as long as it has the content. Too bad.

But didn’t they use to call themselves “Abnaki Publishing”?

Morris bought Abenaki Publishers Inc. in 2002. The link with that info is here: http://morriscomm.com/divisions/mcc_magazines/index.shtml

Sorry to disagree but I subscribe to both AA and FT and continue to enjoy both. I always find a couple of articles that are worthwhile and interesting. Perhaps it’s just a matter of personal taste or perhaps I just have lower expectations for my magazines. I’m sure others will disagree. 8T

My last issue of Fly Tyer is printed on much thinner paper. So thin that I can see the image of the reverse side through the page! I’m sure this is a cost cutting measure, but it’s sad to see such a fine journal going ‘cheap’.

I bought it primarily for the high quality graphics, I might need to rethink my choices.

I have to agree with Orthoman, it has the look and feel like a ‘throw away’ magizine rather than the kind I would want to archive for a lifetime.

I also miss the square binding. It’s going to be a real pain searching for a back issue now.

As noted in the link posted Phil Monahan was laid off as editor of AA. Much of the look and feel of AA can be attributed to Phil and so with his leaving I think we are beginning to see the results.

I believe Phil is still consulting with AA on a contract basis and frequently posts on another fly fishing board (which I’ll refrain from mentioning out of respect for JC and LF).

Man, time flies. I coulda sworn it was within the last 2 years.

Of course, 2002 is in the last two years, right?

I stopped subscribing to all except Fly Tyer until now and just pick up the annual FF special in Gray’s. Once in a great while ill pick one up at the newsstand, but I have FF mags going all the way back to the early 70’s and its hard to find a worthwhile article that I can’t also search back and find already written… Everything cycles 4-5 years

When I saw my new issue I thought the same thing (i.e., “wow, how much did they cut?!?”). However, if you count pages and articles, you will find the only real change comes in the binding style. The stapled binding makes this issue slimmer and less book-like, but it’s got the same cool stuff inside.

I had the same reaction and called them and sent Dave an email hence the reply on the fly tyer board. As much as I hate not having the flat back it’s gonna make it tough to find issues easily on the bookshelf. My AA when it runs out won’t be re-newed seems like it’s more saltwater and places I’ll never get to anyway.

Time to check out some regional mags.

I’ve always liked American Angler and continue to do so. The most recent magazine was one of the best I’ve read…
