Oliver Edward’s ties a Sawyer’s Killer Bug using Chadwick’s 477 mending yarn. It seems that it isn’t available…anywhere. Does anyone know of a similar yarn or dubbing substitute?
Thank you.

yes it is. do a GOOGLE search for “chadwicks 477” and youll find a few places that carries it (substitutes that is), mostly in the UK and not in the states. However, take a copy of the pfoto in one of the links to your local big box craft shop for a substitute.
I dont think Chadwicks 477 is available anymore and Oliver Edwards is probably using up his personal stash.

If you are one of the dozens of anglers with access to ?Fly-tyer?s Color Guide? by Al Caucci and Bob Nastasi look up 4y2r3b23w. How does gray, with subtle overtones of tan describes the color? That?s the base color to the dry yarn.
Glenn McConnell’s Fly Shop in Waterville PA use to have Chadwick’s ‘‘dubbing’’ in a few colors. Maybe he got some left. glenn@mcconnellscountrystore.com
Thanks fellas. I’ll check this info out.
As some others have already stated “477” is not now produced, there are modern day replacements and these are perfectly ok but if you want the real Mc’ Coy be prepared to pay over $100 for a card and that is if you can find an original, they seem to be few and far between.
Ah, FF&FT had an interesting recent article on that yarn. Like a lot of materials, it doesn’t matter what it looks like dry on a vise. What matters is what it looks like wet in the water.
I rarely use dubbing but on the occasions I do, I blend it in a cup with some water and my cordless drill. Not only do you see the real colour, it also keeps the fluff from flying about. After it is blended, I blot dry it and tie.
In any event, there is more to 477 than meets the eye
