Ceramic blade nippers

My nippers, after being used for larger mono, have become a bit less sharp than before (enough to be an irritation). I saw an ad for Orvis brand ceramic blade nippers and thought I would buy a pair. Interestingly, no longer available–the local Orvis says they are not made any longer–I gather they were manufactured in Japan with very specialized equipment, etc., and for some reason, production has ceased. Nothing like being told you can’t buy something to make you want to!
Does anyone know of any ceramic blade nippers that may be available out there? Maybe a pair stuck away in your local Orvis store or ? I have searched the internet–no luck.
Thanks,
ggh

This says currently available and on sale: http://www.orvis.com/store/productchoice.aspx?pf_id=680E&feature_id=&dir_id=758&group_id=792&cat_id=7894&subcat_id=6021&adv=36968&bhfx=10%2C0%2C12%2C36&bhfv=10&bhrf=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dorvis%2Bceramic%2Bnipper%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft%3A*%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26startIndex%3D%26startPage%3D1&bhqs=1

I sharpen my nippers regularly
Takes only a minute

I used to just gnaw the excess tippet and line off with my teeth…like a coyote. Now my teeth aren’t as sharp as they used to be, either.

Maybe I should get some ceramic nippers, too!

ggh…
I purchased a pair of Orvis Ceramic Nippers a few years ago.
They suck !!!
There is a reason that they discontinue items.
I ended up throwing them away.
If you really have to cut heavy mono, get a good pair of pliers with side cutters.

ggh, I’d recommend a good pair of toe nail clippers for about $5.00. I won a ceramic nipper in a raffle and feel like I was took on a freebie. If I hadn’t thrown them away I’d send them to you. Actually they worked good for about three fishing trips then one jaw chipped on some 4X tippit??? Jim

You can probably sharpen the cutters on your old ones with an emery board of a dremel tool. I use a cheap pair of nail clippers and they work great.

I sharpen my metal line nippers by holding them in the closed position and holding that flat surface against a honing stone and give them a few strokes and that usually makes them work a lot better.

Just a thought…

I use those cheap metal nail clippers at the beauty sections. They last a long time and the $1 ones I bought came with a guaranty.

A third on ceramic clipper suckage…

Make it a fourth! What a waste of money!

I know one thing after reading this thread; I ain’t buying any of those ceramic clippers.

I also sharpen my nippers by closing them and running the front flat edge on a fine stone.

Count me as another in favor of “cheapy” nail clippers. I also have regular nippers (not ceramic) that work fine too.

for heavy mono–stick with the toenail clippers—wait for the 2 for 1 or buy 1 get one half off sales (about every Sunday newspaper!)

I’ve always wanted some “Nice” clippers. I once bought 5 of these, one for each member of the family.

They SUCKED. The blade was metal but it bit into plastic and the plastic flexed and soon the edge of the plastic was chipped up. There is one set of super nice clippers that I still flirt with: http://www.fishpondusa.com/pitchfork-clippers.cfm I had such a terrible time with the less expensive FishPond product that I steer away from them. Here is another nicer clipper that I might own one day soon: http://www.williamjoseph.net/product_details.php William Joseph is a great company to deal with, more on that in a week or so.

Go to the dollar store and get a couple of packs of the nail clippers. Toe nail clippers tend to get in the way for me, the regular finger nail ones work great. I keep a set in my fly fishing vest and one in each of my 3 tackle boxes. If I lose one, I’m out $0.50.

Jim

I bought a pair of the ceramic ones a few years ago. After the second day they went into the trash. I now use nail clippers or my teeth.

Save your money! Another for the trash heap, in my opinion.

Can’t speak to the William Joseph nippers.

I’d love to know what “ceramic” nippers can/should do that a a $1.00 nail clipper won’t do. Sounds like the “drafting shoes” we used to sell to freshmen eng. students at UW Laramie.

I knew I could get the straight info from you guys. Thanks! (And think I’ll head off to buy some plain ol’ nail clippers–either regular or toenail. I’ll also try the sharpening hints.)
