- Central Oklahoma, 220 acre pond
We had a cold but nice day yesterday catching huge crappie (12-16 inches) The crappie were near the edges of deeper water on stickups & stumps . We also caught 5 catfish in the 7- 8lb range, and 2 well conditioned bass in the 6- 7lb range. The catfish were very lethargic and the bass fought well but did not jump. We caught these fish all on size 4 4x long crayfish with a sloooow 3in strip and pause retreive. All of the fish were returned.
8)went out late yesterday afternoon by my self for a couple of hours and caught 8 or so of those big crappies, one 3lb bass, and 1 big catfish
Sounds like great trips. I live in far NW Edmond and am relatively new to the area. I have fished mostly the lakes - Arcadia, Hefner etc. but haven’t had a lot of luck so far on the fly. Do you have any recommendations as to where I might go. I fish the Lower Ill. and Mountain Fork for trout but need to find some WW spots closer to home. I would sure like to get into some of those crappies like you are talking about.
Your post make me want to visit a friend in Muskogee!

I have very tenuous access to the crappie pond or I would gladly invite you. My fishing buddy’s daughter married into the large family that owns and lives on the land around the water. I have only fished on it twice by myself with permission from the daughter. The family that lives there of course do not fish, but they are very jealous of their privacy.
I have done well flyfishing the damn on lake hefner. It is rather treacherous waking near the waters edge
but it is exciting because you don’t know what you will catch. The green sunfish are most prevalent but you will also catch LM Bass, catfish and the other day I caught a nice freshwater drum. I would not recommend walking the damn if the waves are splashing onto the rocks to any degree. When the rocks near the water’s edge are wet they are so slippery that it is not safe.
If you are not I recomend that you join up with http://www.prairieflyfishers.org/ They have meetings once a month and it is a good place to make connections. I went to a couple of meetings but ended up not joining because i am still working and my wife and I are very active in our church, and I fly fish around 100 outings (plus or minus)per year. I just did not have time.
