A friend of mine gave me some CDC feathers from ducks he got hunting. I am not sure how to prepate them however. Instead of being fluffy like the store bought ones, these are matted and oily. Can anyone help me prepare these for tying.
Thanks,
Keith

Sounds like you did not get the CDC, you got the oiler puffs. Your friend probably discarded the cdc as the oiler puffs are underneath the CDC. I’m not sure how use or prepare them as I don’t mess w/ them myself.

Just wash them in a little dawn dish soap to remove the oil, the reason why there so good for floating dry fly and thier shape is due to holding the oil screted by the oil gland of the duck so it can spread it over there body while preening there feather.
