Trailing Shuck: Straight Zelon
Body/Underwing: Single CDC Feather
Overwing: Deer Hair
Can’t see the abdomen, but isn’t this really just a CDC & Elk with a shuck?
Yes. As the X-Caddis is just an elk hair caddis with a shuck. The shuck on caddis patterns has been very effective for me. As has the shucked sparkle dun. It suggests an insect having trouble with their emergence.
Could just be an X-Caddis with a CDC feather body/underwing.
The material list I gave indicates the body is CDC.
It must be an X-Caddis with a CdC body/underwing. If it was a CdC and Elk with a shuck I’m sure Byron would have followed Hans’ instructions for the CdC and Elk closer! ![]()

Very nice, that’s how mine are tied. I also have gone to a lighter shade of deer hair, much easier to see.
I believe a CDC and Elk has a full wing? And the CDC X-Caddis has a mid-length wing?
No matter though…nice pattern Byron.
