CDC Parachute Emerger SBS

Shane Stalcup (RIP) came up with a great way to get the most out of lower-quality CDC feathers. Tied here in PMD colors; change to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 125 #16
thread - UTC 70 yellow
shuck - Congo Hair brown
body - biot PMD
hackle - pale yellow CDC fibers
post - Congo Hair white
thorax - Superfine dubbing PMD

Part 1

Mash down barb, attach thread at point above point

tie in shuck and wrap back halfway down bend

tie in moistened biot; wrap to initial tie-in

Cull through your CDC shorts, broken-tipped and otherwise lesser loved CDC feathers and strip off some fibers; tie in

tie in hank of CH directly on top of CDC; figure-8

Part 2

pull CDC & CH straight up then a couple wraps around the base to post it and distribute CDC more evenly

dub thread, dub thorax; half hitch x 2, SHHAN

pull CDC fibers down and clip even with gap

pull post up and clip (shank length)

Scott

Thanks for sharing this style of tying

Huh, this did not go the way I thought it would. I had expected the old bulldog clip/dubbing loop method. This approach seems more simple and efficient. How does this pattern fish/float?

Nice tie, great photos as always.

Inserting the CDC into a split-loop and creating DIY Henry’s Fork Hackle would work, too. Like you said, though, this way’s pretty simple and quick. The fly floats very well; it’s caught some fish and kept some roosters off the chopping block.

Scott
