Caught first fish on my own fly.

I just want to brag a little on my first fish caught on a fly that I tied myself. I actually caught quite a few. I don’t have a dig camera so I don’t have pics. I tied up some #18 Tungsten BH gold ribbed midges. It took me a while but, after the temp came up and made the fish more active it was the fly to have. I tied a dozen midges in 2 types and I only used about 4 total. Temps started out around 28 degrees this AM and warmed up to about 40. I can’t wait to tie some more stuff.

Good fishin all and Happy New Year!!!

Rich

Way to go!
You need to retire that fly and put it in a place of honor.

I forgot to do that at Lowell on my first dry fly catch ever. Instead I kept right on a fishing till a fish wandered off with it. Then by the time the dime dropped It was to late.

I never used to have confidence in my personal tied flies till I finally bit the bullet and actually tried one and it worked. Now I don’t use store bought hardly at all. I have the first wet fly I caught a fish on but alas not the dry.

Way to go Indeed!

Good on you!!! Now … just wait till you catch a fish with a fly you’ve tied on a rod you’ve built!!! <heh, heh, heh … evil little laugh!!>

Gnu Bee is right. Put that fly in a safe place. It’s the start of your collection to commemorate your great moments in fly fishing. I’d keep it just to remind myself I once went fishing in weather that was only 28 degrees. 8T

And let’s not forget with your own handmade furled leader.

Congratulations NoLuck on the hookup.

WTG NoLuck…but I’m afraid you now have to reregister a new name as here at FAOL we believe in “Truth in Advertising”…(just ask Jack and Betty ;-))

Thanks for the congrats.
I’ll probably be taking some tying lessons here before too much longer. I can learn from friends here and there but, I think I’ll really accelerate the learning curve by taking lessons. It’s funny just a year and a half ago I said I would never need to tie my own flies. It sure makes the down times go bye a lot faster.

Rich

Many Congrats, NoLuck!!
Like’s been said, already… “Nothing’s better than that first fish on a fly you’ve tied yourself”!! But, then again… there’s nothing better, than catching that 589th fish, on a fly you’ve tied yourself!
Unless, of course… it’s on a fly, you’ve tied yourself, connected to a furled leader you also made, coupled to and fought to the net with, THE ROD you’ve built yourself!!!
Then, also, there’s always the thrill of “catching that fish, with the fly, tied to the furled leader, coupled with that BAMBOO rod, you’ve built yourself”… then the GRAPHITE ROD you’ve built… and the GRAPHITE 7’ 6" rod, you made and the 9’ GRAPHITE ROD, and the 8’ BAMBOO ROD you made!!
And, to really add to all of this self proclaimed thrill… you’ve done it all, wearing those lavender and orange, knee high SOCKS you’d knitted yourself!!
Way yo go, NoLuck!!

WTG! I just started to try to tie flies last week. Yesterday in 30 degrees I decided to try out my new 4wt fly rod with no expectation on catching a fish but tied on a size 4 bendback I tied. It seemed a little heavy for the 4wt but did get a bass to swirl on the fly no hook up but hey he was interested.

Catching fish on your own ties is the icing on the cake. An incredible feeling of accomplishment, and gets you back to the bench really fast!

Congratulations! There is nothing like the feeling of catching fish on your own flies. Now, about that user name. Throw that monkey completely off your back because you ain’t “NoLuck” no more!

Good for you. Aint it great to catch somthing on a fly that you did up yourself!!!
You probably started tying to save a buck? Too bad bubba, you are now involved with an addiction. When you end up shaving the wifes cat (just the underbelly) for angora dubbing ( it winds on sooo nice), its time for detox, ak.a a fishing trip.
Keep up with the tying,
like the man said , you wont use store bought after a while.
Best wishes ,
Perch

Well done NoLuck! When I started tying my own flies I stopped buying flies as a way to keep me at it to improve. Took me a long time before I caught a fish on one of my flies, but once it started I’ve had some days of good fishing (and still, some blanks too of course). But, I highly recommend lessons. They are an excellent idea and it’s the best way to learn new techniques and to get the pointers on proportions, etc.

But, regardless, congratuations again.

Congratulations on a new addiction…

Congrats Rich I know a good place to get a lesson or two click on the link below by my sig.

Its a great feeling isn’t it? I remember the first time that I did it and it was like I opened up an entirely new chapter in my fly fishing book of tricks.

Congrats!

Congrats! Now, take up the offer from Jon Joy and get some lessons from them thar Ozarkboys fisher guys. They might even have a rod building course you can get into…or a furled leader course…or a net building course. The sky’s the limit from here. You’re hooked and you can never go back.

Joe

I believe this month there is a tying woven nymphs class. And next month having an all day with Bob Clouser event.

That first fish on a self tied fly, that’s alot of fun, I looked around my first time and said, did you see that? lol I was fishing alone at the time so lol so I must have been a little excited…
