One of my many vices is picking up out of print fly fishing books, pattern books, and the like. Recently found a part of a series published by Field and Stream. In the pattern book the pattern “Caterpillar” caught my eye. Three turns of hackle at the hook bend, Yellow/green floss body. peacock herl back over wrapped with wire,Three turns of hackle at the front.Thread head. I tied this on a size 12 streamer hook and on some I added a bead head for depth. Holy cow do the Gills, Rock Bass, and Largemouth Bass like this fly. In two hours on Fathers day morning fishing around piers and fallen trees, 14 LMB,3 Rock Bass largest 14",multiple gills the largest over 9". Sometimes the simple flies work the best.
Wow that sounds like a really good pattern. I’ll def. have to give it a shot.

Now you have intrigued me! Does the pattern look anything like either of these two? Just trying to get the image in my mind and these came to mind.

Using my imagination I came up with the double hackle looking fly but, with a peacock back with wire wraps and a thread head.

Close on the photos but not quite. If you get to any of the Dallas FF meetings, they have a video I did of Michael Verduin tying the caterpillar. It is weighted with a number of turns of lead and has a grizzly hackle at each end. In the middle is yellow yarn wrapped with silver tinsel ribbing and a ‘shellback’ of 3-5 peacock herl. You should be able to check out the video from the club. I’ve never used this fly myself but Michael said it was one of his favorite and most effective bream patterns.

I have found that, at least in my mother-in-law’s tank up on OK, that the color yellow is a killer.
You can bet that there will be some caterpillars in my flybox this coming Fourth Weekend.
