Catalpa Worm

Does anyone out there have a good recipe for a Catalpa worm fly?

Anyone ever tried one? I’d think they would do well for panfish especially.

How about an inside out pattern? That’s how a lot of folks fish the naturals.

Just wondering.

Thanks,
Terry

Hi Terry,

I have memories as a youth fishing the
catalpa worms with my Dad for copperhead
bream.G I’d get hollered at if I put
one on the hook rightside out, but it surely
was a yucky thing to turn them wrongside out.G

As far as a fly pattern, I know of none
tied wrongside out, but this pattern I
received from Biot Midge here on FAOL
certainly reminds me of the catalpa worms.
I’ve not yet had an opportunity to fish
them but am convinced they will work well
here.G

Warm regards, Jim

I’m sure someone out there has one of Michael Verduin’s Catalpa Worms to post a pic.

RG,
Now that you mention it, [url=http://warmwaterflyfisher.com/jarsofflies/Bluegill/jarsofflies_Verduin_Catalpa_Worm.htm:19525]http://warmwaterflyfisher.com/jarsofflies/Bluegill/jarsofflies_Verduin_Catalpa_Worm.htm[/url:19525]

Thanks for the info guys! I’ll have to give this a try.

We gotta fix this red face thing… :0)

Spring 99 Flytyer has a good catapiller pattern on page three.

Michael Verduin’s Catalpa Worm is probably the best of the bunch. I’ve got a video of him tying the fly that’s a little over 30 minutes in length. I plan on donating a DVD of this to the Southern Council Conclave in October for the silent auction. I’ll try to post a photo of the completed fly.

Here’s an attempt of mine a few months ago to duplicate the fly Michael tied:

Also a note to the link above - when I saw him tying the fly, he used a size 8 salmon hook and not a straight shank hook.
