Used the cash for clunkers program to get a new SUV. My clunker has a 16 MPG average according to the government and my new vehicle has an average of 21 MPG. This 5 MPG difference qualifies for the max payment of $4500 which is about 2000 more than the highest offer I got when I tried to sell my pickup outright. Not too many people wanted to pay a decent price for a truck with 150,000 plus miles which had seen every dirt road in Southern Oregon several times over. What is sad is that the truck will be scrapped even though it is still mechanically sound, uses little or no oil and still has a respectful looking body. Plus the old vehicle actually averaged 20 MPG, not 16. Makes a person wonder.
What the gov needs to do is come out with a useful and practical program. I have a fly rod with a bad reel seat that comes apart every now and then, and am thinking that if the feds would give me $500 toward the purchase of a new fly rod I would be in great shape.
Tim,
We did it on our way home from the MIFI (see sewdrapes new fishing mobile) we used her old blazer that was dying from cancer. Paid 800 for the blazer 2 years ago. I’m worried that the Goverment is going to realize they actually did something to help us working folks and demand their(Ours) money back:rolleyes:
Owned a 2000 Toyota Tacoma and went in for some work and an inspection a couple of weeks ago. They wouldn’t let me have the truck back because of “safety factors”, gave me a free loaner for 30 days and bought my truck for 150% of excellent rated Kelly Blue Book value. Had 97,106 miles on the old clunker. They said “productions problems” with the 1995-2000 Tacoma’s cause rust problems in the frames and mine was apparently a bad one. Got a new one with all the bells and whistles for under $12,000! Finally, for once, fell into the proverbial barrel of poo and came out smelling like a rose. If anyone has a Tacoma in the bad year range need to have it checked ASAP. Service tech told me they were afraid to put one up on a lift and the owner was really pissed till they tapped his frame with a ballpeen hammer and it went right through it like it was glass!!!
Simple question. Why the heck should I help you folks buy a new vehicle? This program dosn’t create any jobs that will last. Just another liberal give away program that our childran and grandchildran will have trouble paying for. Falls in the catagory of LBE (Liberal Bovine Excrement).
This is pretty old news in the 'Yota community (I drive a '99 4Runner). You would be surprised how many people STILL haven’t heard about it…
BTW, the above post is correct. Cash for Clunkers is out of money already!!! And the same people want to run our nation’s healthcare system.
Wow, that’s great as I understood the program the old vehicle must get below 18mpg and the new vehicle must get a min of 22mpg to qualify. In order to get the full $4500 the new vehicle must get 10mpg or more then the old vehicle. You get $3500 if the difference is between 4 and 9mpg. They must consider your SUV a light truck. I guess I better read up on it a little more!! http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com/
Now, who started what?
Are you THAT blind?
OK, lemme put it this way, I’ll kick your left butt-cheek, then you turn and let me kick the other butt-cheek.
Interesting, we ran similar numbers, 14 MPG trading to 21 MPG, through the government’s software earlier this week and it was rejected. The rejection reason stated that 22 MPG minimum was required to qualify for the $3500 payment level.
I don’t have any “clunkers”, but for those that could jump on that, GREAT!
It is rather dismaying that the funds were sooo short sighted as to be burned through in a week.
And that the dealers are having so much trouble with the web site to do the registering of the clunker.
If they can’t even run a web site, how are they going to run this country?
