Those that use a fanny pack instead of a vest how do you carry a net ?i have not found a good way of carrying a net while fishing. tryed a magnet attached to my landyard don’t like that . tryed sticking the handle down in my wader belt, wasn’t to good of idea, now trying a bungie to handle over the shoulder, not ideal . lookin for some idea;s other have tryed ?
I usually don’t carry a net. If I do, I can plan on a skunk day. I did see some folks using a fanny pack or chest pack using this. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fly-Fishing/Fly-Fishing-Accessories/Nets-Wading-Staffs-Creels%7C/pc/104793480/c/104721480/sc/104339880/i/103892580/William-Joseph-Hook-Net/744632.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fly-fishing-fly-fishing-accessories-nets-wading-staffs-creels%2F_%2FN-1100462%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_103892580 They seemed to be very happy with it. Don’t know if the net brought them a skunk day or not, but it surely would have for me.

If you aren’t using a vest you should be good enough to land a fish without a net.
I use a carabiner attached to the belt and have a magnetic release with bungee on the net.
Exactly what I do as well.
I finally bought one of these, after trying different magnetic attachments, & it works great for me.

thanks for reply .good idea carabiner i try that, most of the time i don’t carry net. but it is time to start swinging streamers for big browns just need to be prepared if i get lucky.
Mike, Does the net stay attached to the device?
Bruce
Yes, but it is no problem & it has a “quick release”. I hang my net separately when I get off the water. BTW, My net is a long handled Brodin Cutthroat & it is held securely. Here is a good pic from Cabelas: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Gear-Keeper-Net-Retractor/732334.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dgear%2Bkeeper%26x%3D22%26y%3D12&Ntt=gear+keeper
FYI: I did my research on line, then checked Gear Keepers website for local dealers & purchased mine locally.

That’s one I always get a kick out of: the truly GOOD fly fishermen don’t use a net.
No nets, no indicators (or for the REALLY good, no nymphing at all). There’s more as I recall, it’s just that I have a hard time keeping up with all the things I need to aspire to in hopes of reaching that exhalted plateau.
John,
I think we’re in agreement here.
MY exhalted plateau (and my definition of a GOOD fly fisher) is getting young folks interested in it. That’s done by showing 'em it’s FUN…net, no net, dry, nymph, indicator. I’m certainly not an accomplished fly fisher, but I’m damn sure a GOOD one & proud of it. Besides, my Grandkids like to dip “stuff” with my net when they tire of fishing. ![]()

Minimalists don’t carry nets.
I had a pair of wide clip-on suspenders. I drilled two holes in the leather patch where the two straps cross between your shoulder blades. I used a wire tie to put a loop there, then used that loop to hold my magnetic net release. It worked fine.
oldfrat - very good idea! I’ve not looked on-line, but there may be any number of outdoor oriented shirts/jackets that have a sturdy loop between the shoulder blades? My rain jacket has one and I looked at a couple of long-sleeved shirts(Remington) that have very sturdy loops on the back. I carry my net with the hoop towards the head, so I can just grab the handle and pull on the quick release. This keeps the netting up high and less prone to grabbing a hold of passing bushes. Also, the net does not swing side to side as much as when it is hung by the handle.
Mato - minimalists should be able to MAKE a net with what ever is available streamside!! HA!
For me, there’s something aesthetically pleasing or traditional about a fine grained wooden net, to add to the experience. For others, they’re a royal pain in the … YMMV! If you use dropper flies and they’re not barbless, you will have some problems.
Best regards, Dave S.
I bought something on E*** called a “de-vest” that worked fine, basically a light web harness with all sorts of little d-rings on it.
I have what is actually a key ring that snaps open and closed. I close it about the strap of my fanny pack, on the side, and clip the net to it. I think this is similar to the caribiner suggestion. It’s nice and handy. The only problem with this setup is that the net hangs low, against your legs. If you go through brush, it gets hung and can rip the bag.
I also use a carabiner with magnetic net holder. I hang it from the grab strap on the top of my Camelback though. I always wear that thing no matter what the excursion. Sometime I will tuck it into my waist pack belt though.
I usually just take the net on bigger waters where I know the potential to hook 15+ inchers is there. It makes your life a lot easier and can be a lot easier on the fish I imagine.
some of these responses failed to understand the question. must be the winter blues.
I just slip it in the top of the back of my waders…unless I have a jacket, then I go without a net.
