Carrying case suggestions for vise, tools, etc

I would go with a large takle box .

If you could pick one up on sale.

I gave my wife the old one that I had, and sort of regret it when I saw how it held all of here sewing stuff.

It was a very large one with the lid that opens on each side, it also had a detachable bottom compartment. I had picked it up for about 20 bucks on sale, at a large fishing retailer.

Go check out the big name store on line, they are having quite a few sales this time of year, and if you buy, go bigger then you think that you will need.

She saw the gleam in my eye, and said that I could not have it back.

Thats the way the ball bounces!

Take care,
chris

Several years ago I bought a small padded zippered pouch from Cabela’s that is approximately 5x9x2. It has sewn compartments in both sides of it to accomodate scissors and pockets for bobbins, bodkins etc. It comfortably holds all of my tying tools and even has room for 3-35mm canisters that will hold 5 loaded mini-spools each ( 15 sewing machine type bobbins…that’s a lot of thread!). A similar type pouch could be made from a kid’s school pencil case with some foam to line the interior. I also purchased a hard sided attache case at Goodwill to hold all the materials and whatever pattern books or instruction sheets and hackle in the file compartment of the lid. Sometimes I just write down the recipe on 3x5 index cards instead of hauling the whole book.
I too use baggies to hold various materials which I then use to pad the vise in the bottom section. I usually disassemble my Renzetti vise (separate stem and head from the base) so that everything travels flat.
The glues/head cements are double bagged and then packed in another small plastic box just in case one might decide to leak. I always keep my hooks in their original boxes and/or packages so I just pack those up in a plastic sandwich box.You might want to check out the plastic containers department at Walmart or if your town has one, The Container Store to find small containers that can be used to hold various items for travel. I have a small canvas totebag which transports my tying lamp (fold-up Ott)which I keep in its original box so it travels safely and an extension cord/surge protector. I admit that I have been thinking a lot about the rolling cases at the crafts store. It would be nice to have one case instead of two to lug into the hotels/motels.

My travel kit looks a lot like this.

I use 2 biggish med sized plastic boxes for the materials, plus a 3rd for tools and a headlight… is quite bulky but then I am usually away over the Winter months staying with a friend - so I take a fair bit with me to do. I am always afraid if I use soft bags that the materials and tools will get damaged.

Thanks Sagefisher,

Just noticed how badly I’ve been ripped off…I bought a Huge fly box just recently…and dare say I may return it for my money back…Then go buy one of those artbins and put some heavy foam in each lid and slice it with one of those rolly type cutters Joann’s also sells…and call it. “Bill’s Bugger Beastie”…

heres my photobucket page… the tying box on there is what i use when i travel… bought it at harbor freight fer 59$ & it holds more then i need to carry + it locks top & bottom… ask for a wood toolbox or machinist tool box…
