Thank you very much for sharing Bill-B’Klyn, lots and lots of useful info. He mentions a couple of interesing patterns.
I gotta tie some small crawfish for carp.

when it comes to crp i like to use some of my home made carp stink bait cant ceep them off the hooks.

Scented flies kind of are a “no-no.” Plus, you really don’t need to use scented flies for carp.

I don’t think Charlaine is talking about flies on that one…

Stinkbait for Carp? Never heard of that but I suppose that someone hsa come up with it. Amongst the UK and European anglers there are many recipes for the #1 fish in those parts but stink has nothing to do with it. Bollies, doughball, corn, etc these omnivores are strongly vegitarian and the most stink I’ve heard of using is a drop or two of Anise Oil, or other sweeet smelling additive.

As far as Fly Fishing for this fine Gamefish goes, congrats to the pics and post herein as this is one of the best strings since Dave Whitlock published his articles in Fly Fisherman and the Carp forum there was alive with comments. This is a superb discussion with loads of tips and pics!!! Glad to see it.

Here is another discussion about fly fishing for carp.
As you can see I really enjoy the challenge of fishing for carp with flies. there is nothing like the first run a carp makes. It is like hooking a torpedo!

Bill

It’s a “generic” name I imagine. It has nothing to do with stench or fly fishing it’s just a name to what Char uses to catch carp with a spinning setup and that’s it.

Ok…I’ve caught fewer than 20 carp on flies so far. I just didn’t fish for them as often as I’d hoped to this year.

I’ve got a lot more to learn and EXPERIENCE before I’d ever claim to be good at catching them on flies.

But…WOW are they fun!! Last year one day I got into some 8-pounders…and even with the 8wt rod I was using, they were winning more than they were losing. I only landed 2, and lost 3-5 others. Yeah, that first run…you really start to think they aren’t EVER gonna slow down! They were just running straight away from me towards open water. I had broken lines, pulled out hooks, and one that wrapped tangled me into something far out from shore, so that I had to break my line, even though I could still feel the fish on. I’m not complaining, I was loving every minute of it! And they sure don’t like to be landed! They will fight for another 15 minutes just to avoid being brought up into shallow water.

I hope I manage to get into a lot more of them next year!

I hope you fellas experiencing the Shack Nasties like I am, won’t mind me re-posting some of last year’s fish porn!

20 carp on the fly?!?!?!?!?! I think it is safe to say you’ve got the hang of it.

I’ve caught 3 in my life and I was hooked on the first one. Thanks a lot for sharing your pix.

Carp are a funny creature. Well on your way Dave! Once you start catching them, you learn what works, what spooks them. Then again, once you think you got the hang of it, they start turning their noses up at everything you show them.

My best day happened in July of this year, I brought 9 to hand, including a couple 20+ lbs in about 3 hours, I left because I was exhausted. Back the next day and couldn’t buy a take. Just happens that way.

You’ll get it Martin!

Ha ha!..no no, not yet! I said LESS than 20! Don’t give me more credit than I deserve! :stuck_out_tongue:

My best day (first time I’d caught carp on flies)…I landed 4, and missed setting the hook (a.k.a. “angle”…sorry, pun from another thread) on a few others. I was fly-fishing from a boat on a reservoir…We saw small loose shoals of carp moving around the area, and started casting for them out in open water. The water wasn’t crystal clear, but you could see down a couple feet…but not good enough to see your fly drop for very long…so, we usually only knew that maybe our flies were CLOSE to fish. We just had to watch our lines to detect strikes.

Another time I was basically vertical jigging flies while shore-fishing along a concrete wall near some current. I couldn’t actually even see the carp, but hooked up with a number of them by watching my line and feeling for takes.

Neither of these methods is particularly typical or reliable for carp, but it has worked for me on occasion. I envy those who can cast to the fish in/near current, and visually see the take before setting the hook!

OH! I LOVE Carp fishing. It’s the next best thing to steelhead fishing around here and I can find they just down the road…500 yards from my door.

My favorite flies for them are Puke Flies (bottom photo), #16 PT Flashback Midge(top photo), #8 Muncher, Crayfish patterns and Woolly Buggers, but in the spring they hit great on white Zonkers.

Well, 10 carp is enough to say you got the hang of it so cudos for that. Would you mind sharing the flies that caught those nice carp? I’ve got a couple of fly boxes with carp flies but one more (or 5) wouldn’t hurt. Hey Mato, is that a 5wt?
Thank you Flywatersmally, I sure hope to get it one day.
Thanks!

I’ve caught them on white wooly buggers, brown beadhead woolly buggers, a tan-colored beadchain-eye nymph with a rabbit-fur tail and rubber legs (just something I tied up, not sure what it might be called).

2 Grass Carp have come on #8 boa yarn leeches.

My BEST success on carp has been when using a nymph pattern I bought at a store, and I don’t really know what its called. It is sort of a basic hex nymph pattern, though, on a #6 hook. Bear with me while I attempt to describe it:
-#6 Hook, probably has non-lead wire wrapped around the hook shank for weight
-Tail is 8 strands of some sort of hackle or pheasant tail fibers
-Abdomen is light yellow or cream-colored dubbing, with a gray aftershaft feather laid on top (for gills), and then covered with turkey feather as a “carapace or shell back”, over which is wound thin silver wire.
-Head is the same dubbing, but thicker, covered with slightly wider turkey feather “shell back”, and a sparse brown hackl “beard” just behind the hook eye.

I really should take a picture of that pattern, or pay attention to what its called (sure would be easier than describing it!).

When tying carp flies, do you guys have a preference on the color of bead heads? I found some chrome black and some black without any shine. Not sure if the bright gold ones would spook carp.

Thanks
