Carp Crack

After seeing some of Jean Paul Lipton’s (a.k.a. “the Roughfisher”) fly patterns designed primarily for “underutilized species” that he shared with the Fly Fish Ohio website, I had to tie up one of his “Carp Crack” wet flies.

looks great

Looks like a good fly for smallies and crappie as well as carp. Thanks for sharing.

That looks pretty neat! How did you color the eyes?
A guy might be able to tie that on a jig hook, use weighted eyes, and tie it in pink and catch a crappie this time of the year through a little hole in some hard water. just sayin…

Fingernail polish! I noticed in most of JPL’s patterns that use beadchain eyes, he paints them. Usually orange or chartreuse.

I’ve seen painted beadchain available for purchase from some websites that sell fly-tying materials.

Or, you could use Testor’s model paints.

That looks like it’ll get the job done alrighty!

It is VERY similar to the rubber-leg version of Mr. P’s Carp Carrot. Mr. P’s Carp Carrot is endorsed by some of the top carp fly-rodders out there!

C’mon Zac you know how much trouble you get in when you start thinking that way :mrgreen::mrgreen: Hopefully you already have the stuff on hand or Crazy Angler Tackle is gettin some more money. (I promise I won’t tell on you):rolleyes::rolleyes:

Fatman

Believe it or not I miss fly fishing for carp. That’s a great looking fly right there. Kudos.

Here’s some more Carp Cracks and Carp Carrots:

These also look good, not sure what they are called, but are my attempts to duplicate a pattern used by pal Ben and tied by our mutual pal Scott. They also stand up like a Headstand pattern:

Fatman, don’t say that! I’ve gotta make another order with them soon so I don’t run out of jigheads. Haha
Dave, those flies look dang good! I’m sure you’ll catch a lot more than just carp on 'em.

Zac

I love the look of these flies my only concern with carp flies is the smell from paint and glues. Carp find a lot of there food by smell and many times will reject a fly and I think its from the smell. In tying my carp flies I never use glue (just good tying practices and good knots) and when possible I take my fly and rub it in the mud, water weeds and such before using them and have found this to work great. Never use your hands to put on bug cream use a pump spray with hospital surgical gloves or use some of the bug proof clothing that hunters use not the chemical cloths but the netting ones. If you do use glue or paint wash your flies in a baking soda warm water mix and then air them out in the great outdoors. Good luck
