Anyone have the skinny on these reels. They really look nice. Thanks for your time. Here is the link; http://tjsbearden.mybisi.com/products/search?page=1&s=&search=Caps+Fishon+fly+reel.
why not post a link so folks can see what you are talking about and make comments
I have not seen or used one. However I have a ‘classic’ Ocean City reel from the 50’s or 60’s that has the same design as their ‘Classic #1’, so I will make these comments:
They appear to be all-metal reels that have a click/pawl drag. There is no adjustment of the click on model level #1 or #2 (judging by the pictures). Models #3 & #4 appear to have an adjustable click drag. The spool is held on with a bolt (machine screw) and the bolt is held in place with tension, it will probably never be a problem. However there would be some difficulty (screwdriver)/care-needed changing spools (except you don’t have to worry about that because no spare spools are listed), and the trout size models seem to be sold out. Yes they look good and are probably very durable, however they are a bit heavy for their size. Personally I would buy a new Pfleuger.
CAPS is a well-known company in Japan. I’ve been fishing three of their reels for several years. tjsbearden secured a contract with CAPS regarding the Fishon logo. They are excellent reels for the money. CAPS also makes graphite and fiberglass rods and other items that are not available in the US of A. Their weight is not excessive at all in my experience. My Setter Classic II balances perfectly on several of my rods. Also in my experience fit and finish are excellent. Frankly, I am amazed at the low price. I paid twice as much four years ago and am pleased with the reels.

Be warned that the drag is terrible out of the box. The springs are way too stiff. They can be bent and re-tempered per some instructions found in the same forum. The pawls tend to be a bit sticky. They can be replaced with Hardy pawls from a Lightweight series repair kit.
