Cape Cod / West Yarmouth area - STRIPES

Doug (DRG04)and BB:
Family and I are making our first trip NE to visit family and for the fall colors- for me a “rainbow” of colors  . Will be starting in W. Yarmouth Wednesday night 10/11 and staying for 2 days and heading inland for a few more days thereafter. Thinking about chasing some black and white stripes in the early AM before everyone gets up. Any reports? Do you fish the open ocean or the Lewis Bay near by? Will be surf fishing.
Oh, if any of you local Cape Cod West Yarmouth FFer wouldn’t mind chiming in, I’d really appreciate your input also.
Thanks
Quinn

Don’t know the Yarmouth fishing per se, but in general any place on the cape is a good possibility. There are fish on both sides of the cape and now is a great time to go for them.

Wednesday Caster,

What a coincidence. Heading for South Yarmouth, MA on Saturday. Brother-in-law traded his NC timeshare for a week up there. Good luck with the fishing. Try Googling the area and you’ll find some fishing info. Plan on trying the local river near the timeshare and maybe a few “ponds” too. Info found said there were some places to catch trout nearby. Be careful of some site you might find on a Google search. When I tried to forward info to my brother-in-law my Norton checker said it detected a “worm” and wouldn’t forward the e-mail. It was an innocent looking site about the local “Cape” area. Sorry, but, don’t remember what the site was.

Weds Caster, There were a ton of small stripers off Barnstable Harbor mixed in with blues on Sunday. There were a few keepers and bigger bluefish closer to the canal. They will be close enough to flyfish to from dusk til dawn and even during the day if you fish a beach that puts the wind in your face; preferably near a tidal creek dumping bait out. the fish were on some of the biggest spearing (spearling) I’ve ever seen. I had a ten year old in the boat who never fished SW before and he was hooking up on 1oz Spro bucktails and small plastic shads, but they were taking flies too. I would keep an eye on the winds and if it blows NE for a couple of days- head closer to the Canal; NW- go towards Sesuit. If you fish the Brewster Flats, keep an eye on the tide (and chart) and don’t linger when it turns to incoming or you will likely drown. (Not Kidding!)Water temps were 61-62 on Sunday; it’s far from over…There is decent access at Sandwich Creek, Scorton Creek, East End of Canal, Sesuit Harbor, but I’ve mostly fished it from boat for the last few years. Good Luck, Jim

Hey Jim,
Sounds like you had a good weekend. I’m hoping to get my last shot in towrds the end of the month. Please ask the fish to stay around just a little longer. They won’t listen to me, but maybe they will listen to you. I’m looking to get a weekend in Buzzards bay or the Vineyard.

“Sage” advise

I can second that warning, You would think you could outwalk the tide there. You forget about the deeper troughs you have waded through and that they will get a LOT deeper on the way back.
Forgot my camera that day…lucky me. 8)

Tide rises 6" every 15 minutes, and yes- the “guzzles” are the real killers. Add fog, and without a compass or handheld GPS - you will definetely be talking to God… Hey Jed, You 'Ol Pirate! It was a pretty good day on the water, but I had taken friday off and it was a blowout 25kt winds- and I couldn’t switch the day off…Saturday was more of the same. It seems like everytime I take the boat out I either break something or lose something. Sunday it was the boat registration (lost) and found a trailer guide-on support was ready to fall off (with tail light). Just getting my ducks in a row for this weekend and waiting on the weather forecast… Before you tell me to stick to waders; I’ll remind you that I broke the shoulder scouting a spot for that in May… so I guess in the grand scheme of things I’m doing better…

Good to see your shoulder is not impacting much on your fishing. Was at the Swift the other day. Water ws low fish are still rising to midges and I hooked up with a few using #18 Bead Head Gold Ribbed Hares Ears nymphs. I went looking to visit the redds and watch the spawning show but I am still a few weeks early.

Definition of a boat; “A hole in the water that you throw money into”… I’m crewing on a Tuna/cod boat tommorrow- the acid test for the shoulder… But I may head out your way on Sunday. I figure with the foliage and the trout fishing it HAS to be a good day on the water… The house chores can wait! September and October are two of the best reasons to live in New England!!! I had to laugh at the people at my last TU meeting saying that it wasn’t worth fishing now that it’s so cold(!?!). In a couple of months this will have seemed be a heatwave. That’s okay though, I can live with less crowds… 8)
