What would be your first dry fly to tie on during an active Salmonfly [Pteronarcys californica] hatch?
And for RonMT I’ll add …on the Madison?
Do you all think we can get him to commit to one just once?

I’ve got some salmonfly-colored muddlers that get used on occasion. Fish love em.

Something that floats low in the surface film and floats like cork. Something along the lines of a rogue river stone.

“Rogue Foam Stone Giant, Schlotter’s”
That is one of my favorite patterns for stones on the Maddy. You’ll never know my favorite, but the Rogue is a good one. ![]()

Warren,
Does it start with a “B”?
The fly doesn’t even have a name that I am aware of. It is a tie that my friend showed me last year and is just a really simple foam deal that he shades with a marker. The fish seemed to prefer it because it floats pretty low in the water just like a natural and has a very good silhouette. The body is similar to a rogue, but it doesn’t use any hair in the pattern.
Here are three pretty bad shots, but hopefully they will give you an idea of what I am talking about.

I too consider a Rogue style my go to, but I always have lots of others in my box, including a version of the fly of the week that took me about 30 minutes to tie. Don’t know how many more of those I’ll add to my collection before the season starts. I have some salmonfly turks, some barhoppers, some drop downs and a ton of good ol’ bulletheads that I tie with Rainey’s foam.
