Can anyone recommend a good Hex patttern?

Hi,

There’s going to be a good Hex hatch on a local river in a few weeks. Could someone please recommend a high floating Hex pattern? Instructions or a link to instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Last year during the same hatch I used brown and white bivisibles, large green drake patterns, and a foam Hex of my own design, and each work fairly well. But I’m looking for a new pattern to run through a long riffle (thus the high floating thing).

Thanks,
Andrew

Am I missing something here?

Sorry, but I’m no entimologist! When other anglers ask what was hatching, the best I can do is say “big, dark ones”, or “little, tan coloured ones.”

The only reason I say that these particular flies are Hexes is because a guide told me.

Sorry I can’t provide better information. If memory serves, the duns were large (15-20 mm excluding the tails, had lighter abdomens on the bottom, darker on top, wings were dark, but not mottled, and the fish just loved them!!!)

Thanks.
Andrew

Most likely Hexagenia atrocaudata. The H. limbata hatch would most likely already be over in Ontario.

If you’re asking me, I sure do. I’d probably tie something like a Bunse Hex Dun, which uses an Ethafoam extended body. Hadn’t thought of rubber legs, but that might be a good addition.
