Calcasieu Pig Boat

Does anyone know where I can purchase this fly?

Thanks
Tom

I don’t know that you can buy it. If you want the direction of how to make it I can send them to you.

Rick

I’m 99% sure it’s not available to buy but having said that…I love fishing the pigboat with a #1 indiana spinner blade on it! I tie mine with stinger hooks, I’ve found you can get a better hook set using those style hooks. I’ll try to post a pic of my flies later this evening. I would also like to see other people’s version of the fly.

It just so happened that I took one of Tom’s books with me to work today, so I scanned a few pages of interest. This is from his second ed. book but I like his 3rd edition ALOT better. Anyone ever seen the 4th edition?

Mike,

I’ve got an autographed 3rd edition that I bought from Tom a few months before he passed away. Was there a 4th edition?

I have the 3rd Edition, and believe it was the last.

My bad the edition I have at home was 2nd ed revised, it’s almost twice as big as the 1st. Was the 3rd edition a paper back?

My third edition is hardback. The binding is a little light and is coming apart a bit as I have used it. No matter though, since I’ll never part with it. Got it directly from Tom when he was the guest tyer at the Pineywoods Fly Fishers and has a personal autograph.

While I’ve never counted the number of legs on mine, I caught some dandy bass on a yellow pigboat this summer. Great fly. JGW

As it so happens, I’ll be tying the Calcasiue Pig Boat at the Buckeye United Fly Fishers Greater Cincinnati Fly Fishing show this Saturday. The Show is at Receptions in Fairfield Ohio and it a very nice ff show – this is it’s sixth year, I believe.

You can get directions and check out the guest tiers and vendors at the BUFF web page - [url=http://www.buckeyeflyfishers.com:96cfc]http://www.buckeyeflyfishers.com[/url:96cfc]

I like the Pigboat in black with a gold spinner or purple with a silver spinner. Excellent pattern. I also tie this fly in its “Albino Serpent” form (I’ll be tying that one on Saturday, too) with a flat wing. In chartreuse over white its a great bass and wiper pattern.

I also use a lot of Shoat Boat ties - Tom’s name for a small Pig Boat. Great smallmouth and rock bass (and bluegill) pattern.

tpchurch,

Your problem finding these flies may be a mixed blessing. Pigboats are relatively easy to tie. This may be a message from above that you need to take up fly tying. In a short time, you could be tying them in any size or color that you wanted—weighted or unweighted—all for less than 25 cents worth of materials per fly. Try it, you’ll like it. Take the plunge!! 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.

That, in fact, is one of the flies I’ll be featuring in my tying class next Wednesday. Just a short flight, then a 2 1/2 hr drive from the Minneapolis airport. We start at 7, done at 9, then maybe we’ll head to Kegger’s for some relaxation. JGW

Google to the rescue, a very clear page on the fly and detailed tying instructions:

I’ll be tying some up to try this season.

idabelangler;

Very nice looking!! Makes me want to give it a try. I have not felt like tying any up prior to seeing those, but they just look like the basses could not leave them alone.

Don

I took a bunch of pics and wrote a how to tie one up. I’ll send it in for the FOTW if any one is interested.

anybody ever try one of these with a spinner bait skirt from wally world??

idabelangler

Please do submit that for FOTW. We need some good old-fashioned down in the swamp flies like that to tie up for the upcoming bass and giant bluegill jamboree.

P.S. You did a great job on those epoxy heads with eyes.

Thanks Robin! I did submit it. When it comes out you’ll see how I did the head…no epoxy needed!

Thanks Mike,

There it is, FOTW, slicker than deer guts on a doorknob! And I love the simple, elegant solution for the head.

Makes me want to tie flies again (been off the vise for a while now).

I’ve been just taking this all in until now, but when I returned home today to see this as the FOTW, all I can say is I know what I’ll be tying this week! Looks great, whats the best way to fish this?
