Does anyone have an opinon on the Cabelas Traditional II fly rod? They have a really good sale on them right now and I wanted to pick up an extra 4wt. I had one of the original Traditional rods at one time and it cast great for a budget rod. The Traditional II is supposed to be much faster action than the original.
Hi Texfly - When I read about the blank on the rod building forum here, as well as seeing the crazy low price, I just HAD to get one. I bought the 9’6" 7wt 4pc completed rod for $39.99! I work 20 minutes from the Hamburg store, and called to see if they had it in stock - they did. They’re not selling the Traditional II for the sale price in the store, but they matched the internet price.
Looking at the rod in the store, I was impressed with how really good it looks and feels. The blank looks almost identical in color to the Sage TXL, and the hardware was good quality. I haven’t cast it yet, but the action seems medium fast to me (I like fast action rods). Well worth the price for sure!![]()

Here is a link with some information on this blank and a rod built by a friend of mine.

I just ordered the 7wt a couple of days ago…looking foward to trying it out. I had the first traditional rod in an 8wt and really liked it. These seem a bit quicker but I think it’s just what I need right now.

I bought this rod , the 9’6" 7wt this Spring. I love the rod, a real cannon. But I paid $109…BUMMER!!!
I have the Traditional II in the 8wt and love it, paid a little more for mine so I am sure you can imagione what Im thinkin, haha, but its agreat rod, well worth what they are askin.
I have a Tradition II 4 wt. and it seems like it’s a little soft to be rated a 4 wt. and maybe should be a 3. I think they’re great blanks for sure. I’m thinking maybe the 6 wt. will fish like a 5. Is there any merit to my post? Opinions, no matter how honest, are appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce
Just got my 5wt for Birthday, will be working on it this week. After seeing my fishing buddy’s 8wt he built I’ve been drooling to get one and get it built.
Kelly.
Mark K glad you described it as a cannon…because that is what I was hoping for needed a big lake rod.
Kelly: When you finish your Tradition II give me an opinion.
Will do. I bought a nice smokey aluminum window reel seat and all titanium guides, tip-top and winding check. My buddy who built the 8wt used it this past month while on Henry’s Lake and describes it as a “cannon” and said it was as comfortable to cast all day as any one of his 5wts.

Thanks for the positive feed back guy’s. Sound like I found a winner at a good price. Maybe I need a second one since there still on sale? Hmmm.
I have two of the 11’ models. I watched Kaboom1 roll cast clear across the Au Sable from the dock at Gates Lodge with the 6-weight. The longer rods are heavy, but I like 'em.
