cABELA'S HOOKS

Does anyone know who manufactures the cabela’s hooks? Their hooks are described as being “chemically sharpened” and list the equivalencies to both Mustad and TMC models.
Since TMC also advertises their hooks as being “chemically sharpened,” I am wondering if TMC is actually the manufacturer or perhaps sells them (Cabela’s) their factory seconds. Probably a dumb question but I need to place an order for at least 10 different hook styles in a variety of sizes and don’t want to be pennywise but pound foolish. I really want to avoid wasted tying time, effort and materials loss as well as the potential to be disappointed in performance at
streamside. It’s times like these I really miss my trusted flyshop guys.
thanks for your input.

Hi Gerri,

I don’t know who manufactures Cabela’s hooks, but I have been using them for a while. I haven’t had any problems with them, either at the bench or on the water.

Mike

I’ve got some for buggers and really liked them! wish I could get more, but where I got them was 4 hours away, and I’m too cheap to buy them online lol

Haven’t used Cabela’s but have tried J Stockard’s and like them a lot. They’re made in South Korea, maybe Cabela’s is made North of there.

No idea who makes them, but their dry fly hooks have caught plenty of fish for me.

I don’t know if Cabela’s has changed but shortly after they began to offer them I ordered some and they had on the back label the same model # as Daiichi.

For example I have an envelope of Cabela’s Model 20 size 12 Quantity 25 … the back tag says 1120-Cab-12-25…the 1120 is a Daiici model #.

Anybody out there with recently purchased Cabela’s hooks and know what the tags say?

I ordered a bunch of dry fly hooks of theirs many years ago and they were a lot softer steel than the TMCs, and I straightened out more than a few and lost fish. Think I gave them away years ago, and won’t go back. Not worth a couple cents a fly for me. They might be different now.

I’ve used several different types of Cabela’s hooks in recent years and have found them to be the same quality as any of the Boutique Brand hooks. Many of Cabela’s brand products are actually big-name items with a Cabela’s sticker on them. A few years ago I was told by a very reliable person who was definitely in a position to know, but was not “allowed” to say, that the Cabela’s fly lines are Scientific Anglers lines. I have used several of both lines, and have no reason to doubt it. Same with hooks, they are made by some big hook maker (there aren’t that many giant fly hook factories… ) with a Cabela’s logo on the package.

Interesting comment on the fly lines. I was talking with someone who said, and I pass out the sack of salt, that SA makes pretty much all the fly lines and then they’re rebranded. Hmmmm, could we do a DNA check on fly line?
Mike

Mike, I’ve heard the same said about Cortland.
Please keep the salt in play.

There are only a few fly line manufacturers but lots of retailers. SA is probably the largest producer by a significant margin. They do not make Rio or AirFlo lines though.

Who has used Eagle Claw hooks from Cabela’s? I really like them, especially at their price.

Ray,

I’ve used them extensively. Great hooks. I stopped using them when I found a better priced hook elsewhere.
