Cabelas CGR Review

Recently I was able to pick up a Cabelas CGR 7’ 4/5wt glass rod on sale. A great find since I have been watching them closely for a year or so. Now with the rod in hand, it was a matter of seeing whether or not it performed as well as it looked.

Gee Ralph, that’s a purty rod, flings a craving on me. I love the one piece seat handle setup, it lets you feel the flex of the rod in your hand.

Uncle Jesse, Yes it does. It comes alive in your hand, which is what I do like about glass from the start.

Ralph

I picked up a CGR during Cabela’s 50th anniversary a few years back and I’ve used it fairly often on our small streams around here. It is a great little rod, it practically casts itself. I’m curious if the Cabela’s Prime is anything in the same ballpark as the CGR.

So it works well on Black Hills trout?

Ed

Have you forgotten there are no trout in the Black Hills, Ed?

The Spotted Dace are really nice though…

Ralph, I recently picked up the 7/8 and can’t wait to get it out! Waiting right now on the reel I paired it up with to get here…

Best damn creek chub rod you’ll ever own

I have actually been playing around & found some open water to test on. It’s now paired it with another line which seems an even better fit. I’ve got a Cortland 555 DT 5wt On a Cortland Retro II. I think I’m there. Now, if Spring would just cooperate!

Thanks for the information.

After a day on the water and a myriad of different patterns offered, I will say that this rod is one of the nicest I have ever taken to the water. Quite honestly cannot say enough about about it. It played large fish very effectively for 7 feet of glass.

On sale right now for $90 plus free shipping.
I am tempted, but that TFO glass in the 3/4 was sooooooooooooo sweet…
