What are some of your favorite Blue wing Olive Patterns for eastern streams? I’m looking for something simple but effective. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Oldster
Oldster,
Had good luck with these on the Firehole during baetis hatch (these are some older pics; apologize for the poor lighting); they should work on the right coast, too.
Definitely found the black wing to be more visible in low, flat light conditions; tied them on Dai Riki 125s to take advantage of the larger gap.
For nymphs, I’ve never needed anything more than a Pheasant Tail (flashback’s are my favorite) and softhackles for the emergers - A little different look using hen pheasant tail (all tied on #16 Dai Riki 070)

That Pheasant Tail is a little like ice cream, there are so many varieties you have to love one of them. It seems to me the PT is one of the first nymph patterns new tyers should learn because so many others seem to be a variation of it.
Or, perhaps the old standard Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear?
This is the only pattern I fished to match BWO in Montana in 2016, and the Yellowstone’s fall Baetis fishing is my favorite part of the year here.

Do you have an SBS for the one with the black post? Looks great!

Here is my Go-to BWO Nymph.
Bruce,
It’s pretty much a BRF Madison Guide Cripple without the peacock thorax and black Congo Hair for the wing post. Here’s their vid:
Very easy, effective tie.

Thanks guys. The flies you suggested certainly come from highly respected sources. I’ll try tying some up!

It’s like Christmas all over again. Thanks, PT; lots of good stuff to choose from.
Oldster, you will not lack for options.

I am overwhelmed! As soon as Scott finishes his SBSs of all these suggestions I can spend the rest of my life tying these.
