Buying hooks online

Just don’t ever drop that box  I now keep my hooks in the original packages in a plano box. If I ever drop it, hooks don’t go everywhere. Don’t ask me why I do it this way now versus keeping them open in a hook box. :stuck_out_tongue:

Your are right Clay. I do keep a strap around each of my boxes now. You can guess why… John

I get my hook storage boxes at arts and crafts stores. Look for boxes that are designed to hold glass beads. They close in such a way that the beads in each compartment won’t get mixed up even if you turn the box over, sideways or shake it. They’re great for hook storage.

I have ordered hooks and beads from togens, and I wasn’t very impressed with the quality. They are a solid hook, don’t get me wrong, but there are many with defects. I prefer to order my hooks from The Fish Guy I have ordered many of his hooks and I have seen few defective ones, and the overall quality and sharpness is exceptional. Oh yeah and the price is right too!

The Fish Guy’s beads are better than togen’s too, the majority of the beads I got from Togens in the smaller sizes have oversized holes due to the countersunk side of the bead being over-drilled right through to the other side.

I have ordered multiple times from both places, but if i were to pick one it would be The Fish Guy.

I get mine from H&H and have never been disappointed.

Clay that is sure a good method of separating the different sizes I used some #20 mono It was very easy to separate them into sizes. Thanks a bunch.

When I don’t have curved scud hooks on hand I just carefully bend straight ones. The fish don’t care. Ken Sample’s dippers require a bent hook. I just bend them to about right and carry on. You have to be careful tho as some hooks are tempered differently from others and will snap if you attempt a bend.

I just look at the pattern then dig thru my hooks and find a hook size that I think looks good and thats the one. Obviously I too am not a purist.

I was discussing this with a tier at Cabellas. He was quite opinionated about using just the right hook and brand for each pattern. I said I doubted that fish were brand conscious. Musta struck a nerve cause he quit talking to me. As he walked away his buddy told me that the guy was very serious about the subject and that he was a very well known tier. I don’t suppose we will be friends now so I never did get his name.

Its just fishing right?

Iv’e bought all different brands and styles of hooks excepting real cheapies and not had too many failures or problems. My only beef is say when I tie up 12 of a fly to fit a nice neat row in my C&F box and look pretty and one or two then stand out as a different size/length. It challenges my obsessiveness.

Absolutely Yes! they hold up very well, they are all I use now. I found them and tried them when I became a Mr.Mom. The price was right! wonderful people to talk to also, helpful and polite.

Don’t know if this will help the question…but a lot of info.
