Butler's Bug SBS

Creation of B.C. angler Glenn Butler. Seems a bit involved at first, but a cool pattern and subsequent ones go together much more quickly.

hook - TMC 5263 #6
thread - UTC 140 black
rib - oval tinsel gold
tail/underbody - deer hair
abdomen/thorax - rug yarn dubbing olive (original calls for seal; cut up rug yarn pulsed in the coffee grinder yields an acceptable substitute)
wing case/legs/eyes - pheasant tail
head - peacock herl

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, wrap to bend

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of deer hair (you want stuff with fairly long fibers); tie in but don’t trim, wrap to 1/2 mark

fold the butts back, spiral wrap to tail; trim butts

tie in rib

wax thread, create dubbing loop, insert dubbing, twist and wrap to mid-shank

Part 2

counterwrap rib; tie off/trim

tie in wingcase

knot some pheasant tail clumps; tie in perpendicular to the shank, with the legs trailing

dub thorax

pull wingcase forward; tie off

divide butts; set in place with cross-wraps

Part 3

tie in peacock herl; twist, wrap head, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN, trim eyes

looks like it would hover just above the weed beds
