of course they will catch a smallmouth!!!
waynep: Great looking smallmouth patterns. Do you know of any bunny fly tutorials so I can see how you tied them? I’m going to do some smallmouth fishing for the first time next Saturday.
Those are one of the easiest flys I have ever tied. Here are instructions and materials that I used. I will try to put together a version with pictures soon.
Size 4 streamer hook and dumbell eyes. Tie the eyes on the bottom of the hook clouser style.
Using cross cut rabbit zonker, tie in at the back of the hook and wrap thread to front of hook. You’ll notice the hair lay direction of the cross cut strip. You’ll palmer the cross cut strip forward making sure the hair lays back. Tie off at the front of the hook. Use your bodkin to make sure the hair lays to your liking.
Turn hook over so the point is up and the eyes are on the bottom. Using a straight cut strip. Pierce the strip planning on leaving a hook length off the back. Push the strip on to the hook. Take the hook out of the vice and push the strip all the way until when you pull it forward to the eye, it will stay on the hook. Make sure the hair is up towards the point. The fly will ride hook point up. Try it, you’ll understand I hope. You don’t tie it at the back, it’s held on by itself.
Pull hair strip forward and tie off at the hook eye.
Your done! Tie in various colors of your choosing.
Besides these, take Clouser minnows in Chartreuse and white. I like Chartreuse over Orange (Fire Tiger) for smallmouth. Those are my two main smallmouth clouser colors.
You’ll also need some crawfish flys. I like Crazy Dads, Whitlocks NearNuff Crawdad, and Gitzits.
One other fly that I like is the Clouser Foxee Redd. It’s tied with Red Fox tail and I put in lots of flash. Nice fly. I bought the book called Clousers Flys. I caught a nice smallmouth last night on a Olive/White Half & Half.

ill have one for you tonite
Bunny flies are great! Just have to allow for all the waterlogging when casting. But the results can be worth it!
