Decided to give the floss-bodied bucktails a rest last night and tie a few crazy-looking bass flies. Have a look:
And last, but not least, a crayfish:
As always, PEACH.

You people in the “sno-zon” are really coming up with some inspired stuff.
Love the crawdad.
They say it might rain a little bit this week.
I only made like a dozen flies for the next season, but got a chance to harass a bluegill at the park after tennis on Saturday.
Sad part is, there’s open water, I just cant trust my vehicle to get me there, park off the edge of the road, and be able to get back on the road when I’m done! Not to mention walking to and from the water in 2 feet of snow in felts…oh, and the cold too.
Nice looking flies. I’m sure a bass somewhere in PA is just waiting for one of them to swim by and nail it.

In the interest of improving your skills, only… Get the thread back off the eye!
art
Very much appreciated! (that’s why in include the PEACH on every thread!), however, this one is intentional. The reason for this is that the end of the wire on some hooks is rather sharp, an winding thread up over that part will keep your tippet up away from such sharp hazards, diminishing the probability of a nicked and severed line.
If you’ve more to say about this, please, please speak up…I’m always interested to head what others have to say about my ties.
That craw is sweet!
Know what ya mean on the snow. Was thinking of going musky fishing and they piled all the stinking snow up at the ramps where it be long time I can use it.
What kind of fur did you use on the craw, other than the orange rabbit, it looks like maybe coyote?
Talk about coincidence! One of the tiers/ one-hour presenters at the Texas FlyFishers annual Fly Tying Festival, held here in Houston last Saturday, titled his presentation “Rabbit Flies”. The only material he used other than rabbit was peacock herl for topping. He did a very realistic bluegill during his one-hour presentation. Great to see someone else doing it. BEAUTIFUL FLIES!
For those of us located on Texas’ upper Golden Gulf Coast, in lieu of snow, we get nasty drizzly rainy gray, often foggy, days with temps. from the mid-upper 30’s to low 50’s, and winds from 12-15mph to in excess of 40mph on occasion; sometimes for days on end. Like snow, it is not conducive to spending much time outdoors. So, we too while away the time tying flies, making rods, etc.
Nope, that’s rabbit too. Instead of zonked hide, it’s cross-cut strips, undyed, natural color. Wound on similar to a palmered hackle, then pulled down like you would a beard on a wet fly, then the thin skin pulled over the top, and the wire rib.
Really like the craw Cold…you should submit as the fly of the week :tieone:
or at least post the recipe.
namekagon, I’m not sure how it’ll perform underwater, though. I just kinda made it up on the fly…erm…no pun intended…
I might end up doing a few for a swap, though, so it wouldn’t be a big deal for me to take some step by step photos and throw together a tutorial, if people wanna see it.
