Building my own tying bench

I’ve spent this weekend building my own bench. Figured this would be more fun and a lot cheaper than just buying one.

Check out the pics! [url=http://www.lukemccoy.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album52&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php:b846d]http://www.lukemccoy.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album52&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php[/url:b846d]

I’m pretty much done. Just waiting for some things to dry and I’ll be adding the magnetic strips and buttons, adding some foam to put flies on, and some hooks on the arm edges to hang things from. Then all that’s left is to burn my names into the corner!

Luke,

Man, that sure is pretty.

I use an old surveyed out from an eletronics firm 8’ workbench with shelves built behind it from 1/2 scrap plywood .

STILL need more room…

Good Luck!

Buddy

Thanks! I can’t wait to have it completed tomorrow and ready to actually use. And I’ve already thought of bigger ideas. I really had fun doing all the woodwork myself so my next project will be to build an actual desk and I’m thinking of making some kind of docking station for it, an idea I got from my computer docking station.

This way I can just slide and lock this thing in it and take it out if I want to bring it with me somewhere. And of course the desk I’d try to build draws and shelves and all that good stuff. But of course, this is just an idea for now.

By the way, if you want to see how much it cost, under $50, and all the materials, I’ve listed them on my site as well.

Nice bench Luke, gimme a shout when you’re next in Scotland, and you can build me one too, lol

Born to fish, forced to work.

How about I give you the plans for free? haha I was thinking about getting some software to do plans in just to mess around with.

Nice looking work. You might take a look at TurboCad. Inexpensive, but pretty darn powerful, especially for smaller projects.

Jim

Real nice job! I love the light and dark look! CJ

Thats sharp!!!

Very well thought out everything at hand yet not cramped and in the way,Sooo ahhh when you going into production?..lol…I’m working on material storage myself, tying area is pretty secure.

“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best

“Wish ya great fishing”

Production, I don’t know about. haha. My friend already hinted toward the fact, mentioned how much of a mess his desk was. I’m just getting into tying flies on with it now. And its still pretty bare, I need to build up all my materials again.

Here are some of the flies I’ve done so far, nothing great, just trying to get back into the groove.

Very nice. It sure looks better than my 6’ table!

Where’s the Ott Light integrate into the marvelous creation?

I bought a light the other day, its a skinny flourecent strip light that I thought I could mount somehow but I don’t like how its really bright in my face. For now I will stick with the light wherever I’m tying.

Well done, Luke.

p.s. I’m not your father. (sorry, couldn’t resist the starwars reference)

Trust me, I am used to it. Esp. with the past few years that Star Wars has come back.

I was actually named after Luke Skywalker, my brother named me.
