Build #10 - Quicky for Fish-In

I had this 7’9" 4-piece 3wt from H&H so I threw it together last night and this morning. Here’s the before & after on the thread wraps:

Before

After Flex Coat Lo-Build (I should have used Cp to keep the original color. It was really a nice contrast.

Still need to put on the second coat in the morning

Joe

great toss Joe …

darrell,

You’re making me feel bad. It takes me about 3 weeks to finish a rod. Very nice work. By the way, I think it looks much better without the CP. I never use the stuff myself.

I really like the way the thread wraps go deep and jewel-like when you don’t use the CP. Good job!!

Wow, after the epoxy that translucent color looks beautiful! What color is it?

Greg

Ya know, I can’t tell you specifically, since the tag came off the spool. It’s Gudebrod nylon “A”, and appears to closely match the 0541 medium brown. In the sunlight it looks like a deep root beer color. Pretty sharp against the natural graphite blank, and surprisingly lightweight for a 4-piece.

BTW, the rod is way softer than I like, and I probably will not build another in this series because of that. I put a 3wt line on it and could barely get 50’ with it. I might put a 4wt on it to see if casts any better, but more than likely this baby will go on the sale block after the Fish-In. At least I only have $70 in it with the shipping. I’m going back to Batson and Dan Craft blanks. At least they have a backbone.

Joe

Joe,
I built a 7’9" 2 piece Batson RX7 3 wt. That thing has lots of backbone, much faster than my noodle RX7 9’ 4wt. Why the difference in feel in two rods of the same series, I don’t know. Actually they were both hook and hackle kits so maybe my 9’ 4 wt is a Pac Bay, not the Rainshadow. The blanks look the same, though; plain sanded black.
