Budget Tarpon Outfit

I’m looking to put together a budget tarpon outfit and have my eye on a Tioga 12 standard arbor with a large arbor spare spool with a clear intermediate line on the LA spool and a std WF12F on the std arbor spool (both lines very lightly used). Would this be an adequate setup for tarpon fishing? I can get the setup for about $175.

Anything else in the sub $200 price range you could recommend?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

hi BH Spey

If you are going out with a guide , most of times, they will have an outfit that they let their clients use.

You might be better off using one of theirs and pocketing the change until you can afford to sink more into a better outfit if it turns out that you like tarpon fishing.

I started at a low end with the rods but got a Tibor “Billy Pate” reel–i then went to mid priced rods and after a few years found that the high end rods have some advantages other than making your wallet lighter to carry.

The high end tarpon outfits are so limited in their use elsewhere that it just makes better sense to use the guides’ setups—(I found out 4 rods, 2 reels and about 8 lines later)
