I know, I know, you get what you pay for… but… anyone come across some fly line that is inexpensive and casts and lasts like the big boys. I recently read something about Aquanova lines (I think that’s right).
Any thoughts?

i’ve been reading that the hook and hackle line is pretty good.

GOOGLE up some of the big name online fly shops and there should be some left over deals on lines
I’ve been wanting to try one of Global Dorber’s lines myself. I believe they are the Aquanova. Anyone tried them and care to give your opinion?
I have 7-8 of the lines from Northern Sport, the company that makes Aquanova along with other private label lines. All mine are factory seconds.
With little exception, I like them just fine
I think that they may have a bit more diameter to them than the more expensive lines, but they’re supple and cast and float well.
I tend to beat on my lines that I use in the salt and in other less than gin clear waters, so the cheap lines work very well for me
i too have heard good things about the hook and hackle lines. if you’re diligent, you can find lightly used high end lines for half price or less on this forum and others on a regular basis.
Some years back I bought the Aquanova line from Dorber. All I can say is save your money. It didn’t float very well and seemed to get dirty in a hurry. I would rather skimp on the fly reel than the line. You’d be much better off buying Cabelas Prestige, which is around $30, or SA’s Lefty Kreh at $35, or their Air Cel line.
Just my 2 cents.
I tried them also, & agree save your money and buy a better line. With Rio line I’ve never had a problem. I clean & treat my lines after every outing, it works.
I’m very happy with Cabela’s lines.
Randy
I’d say check out the SA lines…
+1 for Rio. I use the Mainstream 5 wt. and it works fine. Lasts about 3 seasons if I clean & treat it regularly.
I have had the hook and hackle fly line for 4 seasons now, and it is still holding up well.
My fishing buddy ( aka the old f@rt ) swears by the wally world fly lines.
Take care,
chris
Personally, I think I can cast ANY line the 30-40 feet I need to. As long as it floats or sinks as labeled, the “quality” is not that important to me.

Hook and Hackle and they have a deal going.
Hook & Hackle Fly line IS a premium quality fly line, but since H&H sells it under their own name, the savings are substantial. Now is the time to jump on board for these fly lines - H&H is giving all FAOL members an additional 10% off through Saturday at midnight. I also just got an e-mail notice from H&H that they’re having $3 shipping. In other words, you can have an H&H fly line at your door for $27.75 !!!

The above thread was started by H&H, and explains what to do to get the extra discount.
I’ve tried those Aquanova fly lines - yuck. One of mine did a wonderful job of holding up the tomato plants last summer.
As for the H&H fly line - my most expensive combo currently has an H&H WF5F on it.
I’ve bought a couple of lines from this ebay seller, not bad for a cheap line:

About on Par with Orvis Green Mountain lines, in fact I think there probably the same line. Green Mountain lines are available on ebay for about the same price or go to Fly Shop Closeouts:

Green mountain lines $7.99ea
My all time favorite discount line is Orvis Clearwater, great line for the money but runs about 1/2 weight heavy. Normal price is $29.00 at Orvis store but go for as little as $10.00 on ebay.

Cortland 333 lines are great for the money and cast well.
I’m with Dudley. I have some of the Northern Sports lines that are going on their 4th year and have got a lot of use. For under 10 bucks (free shipping) they are well worth it.

Either I just got used to them or, I just can’t seem to pass them up when I see them for cheap. I like SA air cel. Not the slickest around but pretty durable and easy to control. Might look into those H&H lines really soon though.

I think it is possible to find an inexpensive line, and even be happy with it.
But, I am so sold on Sharkskin, it really doesn’t matter. That is my choice from now on. Plus I am betting it is going to outlast any of the others, but I fish at least 3 days a week all year long.
I DO think the line (next to fly and presentation) is the most important thing to catching fish on a regular basis and in the toughest of waters.
I agree I can cast just about anything, but now a line that cast itself…welll that there is the ticket:cool:
I use the aquanova lines alot and have never had a problem with them just changed out the one I bought in 2002. I must say I use them for still water fishing the most as that is what I do. I have used the first and seconds. I even use them on my steelhead rods. Some have problems with them I never have. for under $10 (seconds) and under $15.00 (firsts) I will use them. I have not used the H& H lines but if Ron sticks behind them like he does everything else they are great
