Excellent, Mike. Very innovative. Kind of makes me regret throwing out all that old macrame yarn from years ago.

Actually the result of having a one track mind Ron, everything I look at causes me to think about whether it might be some use for fishing or fly-dressing! :slight_smile:

I had the cord lying around for quite a long time, at least ten years or so, ( I originally got it for another reason), and I just started playing around with it one day. I now have a range of excellent flies made with it. The stuff is still cheap, I paid a few cents a metre for the last lot of 4mm stuff I got in various colours.

I will show a few in another thread.

I got to see Bob Clouser tie this last weekend and he was using “Slinky Hair” or “Kinky Hair” which is a synthetic and has some flash built into it. Several companies make versions of the fiber. You could also use EP Fiber or even wig material. He still uses the bucktail for the top (bottom) of the fly to help control the tendancy of the synthetic to wrap around the hook. The top is tied in in a couple of very sparse layers with some flash in the middle, which is in addition to the flash in the slinky hair.

Re: the macrame cord…if you frequent thrift stores sometimes you can find unused spools but I have better luck keeping an eye out for pot hangers and other craft projects folks have turned in.

Another source are those gift sacks that seem so popular…the handles… new they are sort of expensive but you used to get 3 for a dollar at the dollar store.

Hi Mike-Connor;

Thanks for posting, those flies are awesome!

They remind me of Charlie Brewer’s Slider worm/grub.

It sounds like they have a similar action, I’m gonna have to start hunting down some poly rope in bass worm colors!

Thanks again for sharing;

De nada.

Make sure what you get is fuseable… ( will melt properly). Polypropylene is the best for many patterns.

There are plenty more, and the cord is cheap enough. You can make a huge number of flies from 100 yards of cord, even big flies! So it is best to get a range of colours together with a few other interested parties, unless you can get meter lengths somewhere.

Very Cool !!! Love it…just love it !!!

Jim,

Try out “Targus Foxxfur” brand craft fur. The fibers are longer than others. Also “Slinky Flash” used with Foxxfur or bucktail is good.

If you are using some kind of craft fur, you want to use bucktail for the wing on top because it will keep the fur from fouling the hook, and it is more bouyant to keep the fly riding right side up.
