I was reading an old copy of the Herter’s Bible on Fly Tying and came across a Pac Man looking fly where the hook is inserted at a very wierd angle, a fly called the Bubbler. Has anyone an example? Has anyone tied or tried? I’d really be interested in doing something along these lines, although it looks like something tailor made for Hatch and his whirlin’ rig. JGW
They are also referred to in Herter’s book titled Professional Fly Tying, Spinning and Tackle Making" This is an interesting book with some ideas that would be worth giving a try. My problem with tying up Bubblers was getting a near perfect round ball of closed cell foam. Even using the Dremel, it
s hard to make them near perfect and then you need to “hollow” out the center to make it bubble. Lots of work for each fly.

Jim, that was the book I was referring to. Didn’t have it with me so wild-guessed it. I’m glad someone else here remembered seeing it. Really looked like a cool fly, and if I didn’t have to cover a meeting tonight I’d google to see if something’s out there. Probably get a bunch of hottub ads or some S & M toy! JGW
Does anyone know if you can find small (1/2 in. diameter) ball of cork or foam in craft stores? This might be the ticket. JGW
I have seen cork balls down to at least a half inch at hobby lobby before. Might be worth calling a couple of stores and seeing. Heck, even a hardware store might have cork balls.

white43,
When I was at JoAnne, I saw the plastic tubs that have assorted foam plugs in different size diameters in them. They may have foam balls but I didn’t really go through them to find out. Worth a look . They were in the toys section. I assume that they are used for kids art projects. I didn’t need them because I drill my own foam cores.

How many of you know of this fly I’m talking about? Jim Smith must. I haven’t “googled” it but the Herter’s book says it was a “killer” for bass, pike and musky. Might want to check it out, you warmwater people. JGW
